The purpose of the armor of God is the same as God's strength in us, to stand firm. Four times in this passage does Paul tell us to stand. Eph 6:10-13

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of...

The pinnacle of the Book of Romans is 5:12-21. The entire book, all 16 chapters, is about this one idea. The idea is developed in several ways, but the theme runs throughout, the righteousness of God has been given to men.

Our true enemy being spiritual in nature (not of this world) means that they seek to influence the very fiber of our inner beings with a darkness that sweeps down on the very light that is in us and threatening its extinction in our life. Not that our new life in Christ can be taken from us; it cannot. That life is ours forever, but its outworking, our experience of its light and beauty and power can be extinguished.

After studying the concept of standing firm and fighting the good fight, we return to Eph 6 and begin vs. 12 and onward. It will be very important for us to remember vs. 10-11 since those two sentences contain the main idea of the passage. Everything that now follows supports that main idea of standing firm against the schemes of the devil while being strong in the Lord and having put on God's full armor.

The real enemy are spiritual and they seek to quench our spiritual lives, not our...

The noun "fight" is agon, and it is also used in several places that help us to understand our subject. It means to be in a contest or conflict, and the Bible tells us that whether we like it or not, we are in a fight. "Don't be surprised by the fiery ordeal among you that has come upon you for your testing" (1Pe 4:12).
