One of the questions I have heard from atheists, agnostics and those who struggle with the absolute sovereignty of God is this. “If God is sovereign as the scripture bear witness, then why does he also command us to pray”

If God is ultimately fully in control and all things proceed according to the council of his divine will and decree then isn’t everything already decided and wouldn’t that mean that prayer is just simply an exercise in futility?

And on the surface it may seem like a reasonable conclusion, but ultimately it reveals two important things. One is a misunderstanding of God’s sovereignty and how he wields it to accomplish his plan, and second it is a misunderstanding of the nature and limits of man's free will. And third it is a misunderstanding of the purpose and power of prayer.

Philippians 1:18b-20

John Flavel once wrote, "What! At peace with the Father, and at war with His children? It cannot be."

Unity in Christ doesn’t mean that we are all going to be best friends in this life. And the truth is we will, at times, ruffle each others feather and get under each others skin. But what we must do is love each other as Christ loves us, and encourage each other, and endure each others shortcomings. We who have been given so much grace ought to be willing to give it to those in the family of God.

There is no erratic power, or action, or motion in creatures, but that they are governed by God’s secret plan in such a way that nothing happens except what is knowingly and willingly decreed by Him. ~John Calvin

Philippians 1:12-14

David Garland points out “Christian love is neither blind or mindless”. Our love is rooted in the truth. The truth about who God is. The truth of his Holy nature. And the truth that we are called to be Holy as he is holy.

Philippians 1:8-11
