We like Israel are in an epoch battle against evil. We must never understand the power of the enemy. We will suffer through strayings, slippings and setbacks, but victory is ours when we turn back and humbly embrace our Master's covenant love. Indeed, one of the most difficult things we will ever face is the reclaiming of lost ground. At this point in our walk we will have failed, then we will need to know our God has not failed and will not fail us. He will call us to get us to get up and offer us fresh courage for new ground.

Our Lord had come to lead the campaign but His presence demands holiness. Sin had entered the camp. The movement of the Commander of the Lord of Hosts had been halted. Thirty six men died. They may have been fathers, uncles, brothers or husbands and they definitely were sons and grandsons. They were someone's best friend and they were tragically gone because of a reckless disregard for the movement of the Holy Spirit of God. If we are to see the 'kingdom come', we must seek His presence and we won't find His presence until we find holiness.

Alas! we are sadly prone to sin, and evil has great influence over us. When I say this, I refer not only to those who are “dead in trespasses and sins,” in whom sin is the great reigning power, for they are the servants of sin; but I refer also to the people of God. Even we that have been born again, and are, in a measure, sanctified by the Spirit of God; even we, I say, have a fleshly nature, whose tendencies are evil, whose desires draw towards sin. We may face daunting challenges, un-scaleable walls or impregnable Jerichos. We can be crippled by fear, sidelines by doubt or halted by the errant belief that faith is defined as absolute certainty. Then, waiting for absolute certainty leads to burying your Lord's talent under a tree and squandering His gracious opportunity. Acting in belief in spite of unbelief is the 'shoe leather' of faith. It is the courage shouted out at all Jerichos but God will lead only those who are brave enough to follow. The reward only goes to those who calculate the risk and go all in.

General Joshua issues the orders but “the shout of the King was among them!” This story is all about mans submissiveness to the movement of God. Joshua is the chosen leader of the nation and it is to Him, the Lord draws His sword not to the elders of Israel.    
Consecration, circumcision and Passover are all important but Joshua must continue to submit to His King. “Lord, what are you saying?”

Oswald Chambers said, “Consecration means the continual separating of myself to one particular thing. We cannot consecrate once and for all.” As we continually consecrate ourselves to God and take the next step of faith that he leads us to then we will see God do great things among us.   

The people of Israel were to expect God to work a miracle. They were to be eager, gripped by a sense of wonder. Israel was not to lose sight of their God who can do the incredible and the humanly impossible. God always does wonders among a sanctified people!

God's sovereign hand reached down in mercy, not only to Rahab and the two young men, but to Joshua and yet another generation of Israel that did not deserve the kingdom. The patriarchs were not holy men when they were called. God's sovereign grace turned sinners into saints. Neither Rahab nor the young men were holy in the house of ill repute but grace came with a knock at the door, bearing salvation for many.

"Wonders of grace are God’s delight, he loves, for Jesus'  sake, to call unto himself the lowest of the low, and the vilest of the vile. The Lord acts in the same manner still. Let us rest assured that Jesus still receives sinners, and that publicans and harlots enter into the kingdom of heaven before the self-righteous and captious. It is very remarkable that in the pedigree of Christ there should be so many women with blotted characters; that there should be an incestuous Tamar, a harlot Rahab, an idolatrous Ruth, and an adulterous Bathsheba, so that Jesus Christ, the Saviour of sinners, has descended as to his earthly parentage from the loins of sinners, and so is nearly akin to them. O the depths of the grace of God! How matchless is the condescension of the Redeemer! SPURGEON
