If we’ve been to a Christian wedding, we’re probably familiar with Paul’s famous words, “Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love.” While we may see these as personal values, they actually are powerful corporate values that can work against the prevailing ideas that Christians are irrelevant, out of touch, and even threatening to the good of the whole of society.

While Christians have tried to leverage the tools of moral superiority and personal perfection, those tools no longer work in a world where we are minority voices. Focusing on righteousness and godliness instead makes us find powerful tools that work regardless of our status. But what’s the difference?

Something is changing in the world around us. We can sense it. For the first time, many of us may feel “other,” no longer understood, no longer welcomed, no longer in the safety of the majority. While this is alarming for many of us (some of us have never known anything different), are we really in danger? Or are we at a turning point when we get back to true strength?

Every human life leaves a wake that creates joy or damage for those who follow. But healthy legacies don’t just happen; they are the result of godly & wise perspectives, clear intentions, and lots of deliberate work. Deciding what we want to pass on to future generations is only half the work—determining how is even harder.

After we take a hard look at all the patterns we’ve received, it’s important that don’t fall into the trap of blaming those who came before us or seeing ourselves as victims. Each generation and each person must learn to take responsibility for whatever they’ve received, no matter how heavy or unfair it seems. In owning, we find power and freedom.

None of us arrive as clean slates; we are products of those who came before us. What we received from them is a mishmash of good, bad, and ugly—and sometimes you’re not even sure which is which. But we cannot grow (into a whole life) until we do the work of sorting out what we’ve received.

Misunderstanding and judgment are words that might best characterize the current state of intergenerational interaction. But what are we missing when we fail to foster a sense of appreciation and interdependence across generations?
