The Smryna Church was getting crushed by persecutors. There are no words of correction at all for this church. Only words of encouragement. They are told to not be afraid of the persecution they are about to suffer, and to remain faithful, even to the point of death. How does this help? These words come from the one who died and came to life again. How can the resurrected, enthroned Jesus think these words encourage us and them? It really is great

encouragement once we zoom out from our pain to see Him who died but is now alive and ascended.

Message Pergamum: “Nevertheless”

Scripture Reading Revelation 2:12-17

Nevertheless” that word in Revelation 2 does what it always does throughout the Bible. God is telling us one thing. In this case, He’s commending the faithfulness of many believers in Pergamum who have lived faithfully in a city where it’s hard to be a Christian. “Nevertheless,” He switches the topic to those who claim to be Christ followers but live compromised lives. He references the stories of Balak/Balaam and the error of the Nicolaitans. And if we get this right, we are promised manna, and a white stone with a secret name. This is an important message.

Revelation 2:12-17

Life in Pergamum was hard for early Christians. It was a place of incredible Roman power and prestige. Medical care and Roman citizenship were wrapped together tightly with Roman gods and emperor worship. What word will Jesus give this church? “I know where you live. . . . You remain true to my name.” It’s the right text for Profession of Faith and for Communion. May we too be seen by Jesus as those who “did not renounce faith in me.”
