Today Pastor Joel concludes our current sermon series, “Live Like Christ in an Outraged Age.” We’ll consider the importance of neighborly engagement as a means to calm society’s outrage. Here’s a statistic for consideration: 46% of those who have friendships with an evangelical Christian describe evangelicals with one or more of these positive descriptors: compassionate, principled, charitable, and/or ethical. 14% of those with no friendships with evangelical Christians describe evangelicals with one or more of these same positive descriptors: compassionate, principled, charitable, and/or ethical. When Christians are neighborly, the surrounding community elevates its opinion of us. When we don’t have relationships with our neighbors, we are less likely to be perceived well. If we want to be seen as compassionate, principled, charitable and/or ethical, we will need to build friendships with neighbors.

Today we begin a new series, “Live Like Christ in an Outraged Age.” Political campaigns, nightly news, clickbait headlines, social media----we live in a perpetual state of cultural outrage. How can Christians respond like Jesus? How can we share with our culture the love of Jesus in the midst of all the shouting and division? We must bring our best, when the world is at its worst. There are gospel outrageous alternatives to cultural outrage. We will consider a worldview shaped by the gospel, being kingdom ambassadors in a foreign land, contagious love, and neighborliness. It’s a practical series in an angry season in America.

We are an angry, outraged culture. Tensions spool up instantly into “got ya” moments of one liners and talking past each other. Take this Facebook post after a recent school shooting.

Today we continue our Lenten series, “God’s Devil: How Satan’s Rebellion Serves God’s Purposes.” There are two facts in our battle against Satan that should inspire us. First, Satan is God’s Satan. He cannot do anything but that it serves God’s purposes. Second, he is predictable. He has certain patterns of behavior that are constant over and over again. Today we study the temptation of Christ by Satan. We learn what he wants from Jesus and what he wants from us. He would have Jesus and us to turn from God’s will, ignore God’s Word, and avoid carrying our crosses. So, let us do the exact opposite in submission to our great, victorious, sovereign God. Let us know God’s will, hold fast to God’s Word, and expect to carry crosses.
