MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2024

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
 Every valley shall be filled in,
    every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.’”

Nang ikalabinlimang taon ng paghahari ni Emperador Tiberio, habang si Poncio Pilato ang gobernador ng Judea, si Herodes ang pinuno ng Galilea, si Felipe na kanyang kapatid ang pinuno ng Iturea at Traconite, at si Lysanias naman ang pinuno ng Abilinia; at sina Anas at Caifas naman ang mga Kataas-taasang Pari, dumating ang salita ng Diyos sa anak ni Zacarias na si Juan na nasa ilang. Tinungo niya ang buong lupain sa palibot ng Jordan upang ipangaral ang bautismo ng pagsisisi para sa kapatawaran ng kasalanan. Gaya ng nasusulat sa aklat ni propetang si Isaias,

“Ang tinig ng isang sumisigaw sa ilang,
‘Ihanda ninyo ang daraanan ng Panginoon,
    tuwirin ninyo ang kanyang mga landas.
 Tatambakan ang bawat lambak,
    at papatagin ang bawat bundok at burol.
Itutuwid ang likong daan,
    at papatagin ang daang lubak-lubak.
 At makikita ng lahat ng tao ang pagliligtas ng Diyos.’ ”

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”

When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

“Yes, Lord,” they replied.

Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”; and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.

MABUTING BALITA: MATEO 9: 27 - 31

Noong panahong iyon, pag-alis ni Hesus sa lugar na iyon, sinundan-sundan siya ng dalawang lalaking bulag. Sumisigaw sila na ang wika, “Anak ni David, mahabag kayo sa amin!” Pagpasok ni Hesus sa bahay, lumapit sa kanya ang mga bulag. Tinanong sila ni Hesus, “Naniniwala ba kayo na magagawa ko ito?” “Opo, Panginoon,” sagot nila. At hinipo niya ang kanilang mga mata, at sinabi, “Mangyari sa inyo ang ayon sa inyong paniniwala.” At nakakita na sila. Mahigpit na ipinagbilin sa kanila ni Hesus na huwag sasabihin ito kaninuman. Ngunit nang sila’y makaalis, ibinalita nila sa buong lupaing yaon ang ginawa sa kanila ni Hesus.
