He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon...

Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
    for yours is the kingdom of God.
 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.
 Blessed are you when people hate you,
    when they exclude you and insult you
    and reject your name as evil,
        because of the Son of Man.

If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance."

His disciples answered him, "Where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place?" Still he asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" They replied, "Seven." He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground.Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them,and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd. They also had a few fish.He said the blessing over them and ordered them distributed also. They ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over–seven baskets. GOSPEL OF THE DAY: MARK 7:31-37

Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.

After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Sa pagbabalik ni Jesus mula sa lupain ng Tiro, dumaan siya sa Sidon patungo sa lawa ng Galilea, matapos tahakin ang lupain ng Decapolis. Doon ay dinala sa kanya ng ilang tao ang isang lalaking bingi at may kapansanan sa pagsasalita. Nakiusap sila sa kanya na ipatong ang kanyang kamay sa lalaki. Matapos mailayo ang lalaki mula sa karamihan, ipinasok ni Jesus ang kanyang mga daliri sa mga tainga ng bingi. Pagkatapos nito'y dumura siya at hinipo ang dila nito. Tumingala siya sa langit, huminga nang malalim, at sinabi sa lalaki, “Effata!” na ibig sabihi'y “Mabuksan!” Agad nakarinig ang lalaki, at parang may taling nakalag sa kanyang dila, at nakapagsalita nang malinaw. Inutusan naman sila ni Jesus na huwag sabihin ito kaninuman. Ngunit habang pinagbabawalan niya ang mga tao ay lalo naman nilang ipinamamalita ang nangyari. Manghang-mangha ang mga tao. Sinabi nila, “Maganda ang lahat ng kanyang ginagawa! Nakaririnig na ang bingi, at nakapagsasalita ang pipi.”

Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

“First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

“Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Ayaw sana niyang malaman ninuman na naroon siya, subalit hindi gayun ang nangyari. Ang pagdating niya’y nabalitaan ng isang inang may maliit na anak na babaing inaalihan ng masamang espiritu. Pumunta siya agad kay Hesus at nagpatirapa sa kanyang harapan. Ang babaing ito’y Hentil – tubo sa Sirofenica. Ipinamanhik niya kay Hesus na palayasin ang demonyo na nasa kanyang anak, ngunit sinabi ni Hesus, “Kailangang busugin muna ang mga anak. Hindi dapat kunin ang pagkain ng mga anak upang ihagis sa tuta.” “Tunay nga po, Panginoon,” tugon ng babae, “ngunit ang mga tuta mang nasa ilalim ng hapag ay naninimot ng mga mumong nalalaglag ng mga anak. Kaya’t sinabi sa kanya ni Hesus, “Dahil sa sinabi mo, maaari ka nang umuwi. Iniwan na ng demonyo ang iyong anak.” Umuwi ang babae, at naratnan niya sa higaan ang bata.
