Lee Varner is the past Director of EMS services at the Center for Patient Safety. Lee holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree of Science in EMS from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Lee has been a flight paramedic for a hospital-based air medical service and also served at the St. Charles County Ambulance District for over 20 years. Lee is a licensed paramedic, he has certifications as a Just Culture trainer and as a Professional in Patient Safety. He has developed innovative approaches and educational programs to reduce preventable patient harm in EMS. Including the EMSFORWARD campaign, co-development of the EMS Safety Culture Assessment, workshops, and frequent speaking engagements. Lee is a founding member of the National EMS Safety Council, an active member of the NAEMT, and served on the CAAS Standards and Revisions Committee.

Dr. Doug Finefrock, an Emergency Medicine (EM) physician, has dedicated his career towards teaching effective ways to improve the patient experience with continuous academic quality improvement. His academic career began in 2006 as a faculty instructor of medical students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. He then became the Assistant EM Residency Program Director at Mount Sinai- Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan, NY, where he was voted "Faculty Teacher of the Year" in his first year.
Dr. Finefrock now serves as the Vice-Chair of the Emergency Department (ED) at Hackensack University Medical Center in NJ. The busy ED has125,000 annual patient visits.  He is also the Director of the EM Residency Program that he founded in 2013.  The program is now the largest EM residency program in NJ with 36 total residents.  In 2018, Dr. Finefrock became the Vice-Chair of the Department of EM of the new Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall.
Dr. Finefrock has partnered with The Sullivan Group to create the online, video communication PatientSET™ Program that is designed to improve the patient experience as well as HCAHPS scores.  Physicians and nurses in over 300 hospitals throughout the country have used the PatientSET™ .

As I continue to move forward within the patient safety space – I often look back at the decade I spent with my mom during her healthcare and hospital journey. As her daily advocate, I witnessed some encounters that read like fiction. Today as I recall events, I realize that not much has changed. I share only in hopes that you take heed and stay safe. Remember – you have to speak up and stay alive.

Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, is a world-renowned patient safety champion, innovator, critical care physician, a prolific researcher (publishing over 800 peer review publications), entrepreneur (founding a healthcare start-up that was acquired), and a global thought leader, informing US and global health policy. His scientific work leveraging checklists to reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections has saved thousands of lives and earned him high-profile accolades, including being named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine, receiving a coveted MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 2008.
Dr. Pronovost currently serves as the Chief Clinical Transformation Officer for University Hospitals, a $4.5 billion comprehensive, integrated health system with a national reputation for providing world class healthcare, research and education.

Previously, Dr. Pronovost served as the Senior Vice President for Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins Medicine as well as the founder and director of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. In this role, he worked to eliminate all harms in one health system following on his success in eliminating one harm in most health systems across the U.S.
Dr. Pronovost also served as the Senior Vice President for Clinical Strategy and the Chief Medical officer for UnitedHealthcare.
Dr. Pronovost was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2011, elected as Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and has received multiple honorary degrees. Dr. Pronovost is an advisor to the World Health Organizations’ World Alliance for Patient Safety and regularly addresses the U.S. Congress on patient safety issues.
In response to a White House executive order, Dr. Pronovost is co-chairing with the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the Healthcare Quality Summit to modernize HHS’s quality measurement system.

Thomas Dahlborg began his career within the walls of a community hospital as a transport aid, IV aid, and housekeeper. Here he witnessed the impact of relationship and connection within a healthcare system on clinicians and staff, and patients and families, and communities.
Now with over 35 years as a healthcare leader, including six years as the Executive Director for the Hygeia Foundation (a relationship centered care research institute), four years as the leader of the Parent Partner Program for the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ), currently as the Executive Director of the Michigan Center for Clinical Systems Improvement (Mi-CCSI), and also as a patient who himself was informed he would never work again and to get in line for a heart transplant, he continues to drive improved engagement, experience, clinical outcomes and safety for all through a balance of heart and mind.
Tom brings his strong knowledge base coupled with the ability to articulate his passion to position others to achieve their desired results and together make healthcare better – for employees to work, physicians to practice medicine, patients and families to receive care, and communities to thrive.
He is also the author of "The Big Kid and Basketball … and the lessons he taught his Father & Coach" — and through his writing and speaking, is creating awareness of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and their impact on children and adults and putting an end to bullying.
Tom recently contributed to the new book out of the U.K., “Bullied Back to Life” which brings his message of resilience, leadership, human connection and faith overseas.
And in 2020 expects to publish his healthcare book “From Heart to Head and Back Again … a journey through the healthcare system” and create a call to action for betterment for all.
