Paul made me cry.
And then I made him cry. So we’re even. Sometimes you meet people you go fast with. You become fast friends…355mph fast. That’s me and Paul. Within 10 minutes of meeting me, he agreed to be interviewed. As I was leaving, his race car teammates asked if they should get my autograph because I’m famous. I said, “No, but this guy’s about to be.”
Interview highlights:
+ memory loss and name associations
+ healthy childhoods
+ racing to beat 355mph on the salt flats
+ learning to luge at 70 yrs old
+ hang gliding makes him cry
+ life lessons on happiness
+ race cars, hot rods, rat rods
+ the community of sports competition
+ the tallest mountain in the world is in tibet
+ smoking pot in the 70's
A taste:
“I think it has a lot to do with how you’re brought up. Unfortunately today there’s a lot of young people - there’s a lot of guys out there - young men, 21 yrs old - who can no more change a light switch in a wall, fix a toilet, or change a flat tire as go to the moon. They just don’t know anything, a lot of them. They have computer skills but they have no technical skills.”
"What’s the tallest mountain in the world? They don’t know. It’s Mount Everest. Where is it? It’s in Tibet. What’s the square root of nine? Three. What do you get when you mix red and white? Pink. Blue and yellow makes green. […] Common sense is not common.”
Favorite quotes:
“I like everything old except food.”
"Never been so happy."
