Jason G. and I are continuing our quarantine review series. Weekly we trade off a movie, comic, or television show to consume then critique. This week it's Wolfgang Petersen's Outbreak released in 1995. We watched this movie(separately)during its initial run 15 years ago, and it is still a fun horror, thriller, drama with a plausible scenario.

The text at the beginning of the film, "The single biggest threat to man's continued dominance on the planet is the virus," motivated Jason's choice.

The budget on Outbreak was $50 million, grossing $184 million in the worldwide box office. With current events, I'm sure it continues making money through licensing to streaming platforms.

The main cast; Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Cuba Gooding Jr., Kevin Spacey, and Donald Sutherland. There are many scenes where it's focused on the characters faces, and they deliver. The viewer feels the tension, passion, wicked intentions, the history in the relationships, coming through the screen. Speaking of Mrs. Russo, she ages well and still looks great with her most recent big-screen appearance on Avengers Endgame last year.

Jason does say that due to the present-day pandemic, the film may be hard to watch for some. Certain scenes that show the virus spreading are scary.

Jason's final review score is the same as mine, 8.5(out of 10). He doesn't mind the silly drama in scenes but degrades the seriousness. A criticism I have is that it doesn't feel like a big Hollywood production. It looks more like a TV movie.

Have you seen Outbreak? What are your thoughts? Please comment below.

Here's a synopsis of the film. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outbreak_(film)

Erick Jael Fuentes is a dancer I'd see in local dance classes and on my Instagram feed. One late night in 2019, we both attended a party. He impressed me with his different styles on the dancefloor. He's Hispanic like me, and in this NYC Dancehall space, Hispanic male dancers are few and far between. I was curious to speak with him; we got a chance to do so before the pandemic.

Erick is originally from Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico. He feels he was born into dance as his parents, Alejandra and Galdino, met at a block party. Erick's parents came to America to make money and support him. He stayed behind with his grandmother, Silvia, who raised him. Silvia would teach dance classes to the public at the 'Casa De La Cultura.' She taught what excited her, such as Cumbia, Mambo, Swing, and more. Erick started following along at four years old.

There is a stigma with young men dancing, where it can be interpreted as feminine or gay; Erick wasn't exempt. His step-grandfather ostracized him. That later turned into encouragement after he met Erick's first girlfriend.

His peers didn't support him either. Erick's parents would send VHS tapes of dance videos where he would learn new moves. He'd present them to friends but was ridiculed.

At the age of 14, he finally made his way to the U.S. In 2013, Mr. Fuentes took his first Dancehall class with Korie Genius(former podcast guest). He fell in love. Erick appreciates how the roots of Dancehall are still celebrated in songs, dance, classes, and parties present day. Something he feels current Hip Hop does not do.

The Mexican born dancer wanted to dig deeper. Erick signed up for the first semester of DH Evolution 876 in 2019. Curated by another former podcast guest Bling Evo. Bling breaks down a portion of Dancehall's history through lectures and dance moves.

After dancing for close to 20 years of his young life, why does Erick still dance?

It brings him joy and distracts him from his daily routine. It's an outlet to exercise his abundance of energy. He doesn't attend parties often due to his work & travel schedule but continues growing his dance vocabulary by taking 5-10 classes per week.

Erick doesn't want to be a professional dancer but would jump at the opportunity to do so. He sympathizes with others who wish to be pro dancers but stresses having a backup plan. The bills must get paid, and you got to eat.

His advice for other dancers. Keep up the hard work, build your foundation, knowledge, culture in your particular dance field. Appreciate, don't appropriate.

You can reach out to Erick here on his Instagram account at https://www.instagram.com/erick_jael_fuentes/

This episode begins our quarantine movie/tv review series. Jason G and I will take turns making suggestions. We will watch what we've chosen and come back in a week and give our respective reviews.

JJ Abrams-produced Overlord from 2018 is our topic this week. Click here for the film's synopsis.

Jason found the film likable but isn't what he expected. The trailer gave him the impression of a zombie apocalypse that took place during World War 2. He ultimately described it as being a 70% war movie, a 30% horror movie. He also told me the meaning behind the film's title.

Overlord is the military's codename for the Battle of Normandy in 1944. The Allied Forces making their move against German-occupied France. In movie-speak, Overlord takes place the night before Steven Spielberg's 'Saving Private Ryan.' Which in the opening scene, the invasion of Omaha Beach, can be described as a horror movie. He felt the(cast)standouts where Wyatt Russell(Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn's son). Bookeem Woodbine. Who made an impact with very little screen time. Game of Thrones Pilou Asbaek as Captain Wafner. Especially his facials as the monster. Finally, the main star Jovan Adepo(Boyce), walked the line between empathy and apathy. He noted the chemistry between Boyce and Chloe(played by Mathilde Ollivier). Saying that if circumstances had been different, they could've had an intimate relationship. Overlord gave Jason a combination of 1985's Re-Animator, Indiana Jones, and period war piece. He felt the movie as a whole was anti-climatic.

This is the third time I've seen this movie. I saw it once in theaters and fell asleep in the beginning. Seeing it now in its entirety, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Jason gives the movie a 7.5 out of 10, and I 9.5. Overlord is currently available on Hulu and Amazon Prime.

Robin Sharma's '5 AM Club' was my favorite book of 2019. It is similar to Bob Burg's 'The Go-Giver', where a narrative includes lessons to live by.

One of those lessons in Mr. Sharma's book being 'allow your life to happen in seasons.'

In the '5 AM Club,' he gives an example describing trees. Their annual rhythm of losing then blossoming their leaves. They do not resist the seasons. They willingly go through them.

We can do the same.

We grind ourselves down with the same busy schedule all year long. Only to take a week(or two)of vacation to recuperate, reflect, or slow down? One to two weeks, that's it.

I'm writing this during winter 2020. This season I won't feel guilty about staying in and enjoying great food, TV, books, video games. I often travel during this time, as booking trips are less expensive.

In the spring, there will be outdoor activity. But with all the rain, this opens time to meditate, create, plan for the coming months.

The summer and fall are full of experiences, movies, dancing, keeping me occupied until the end of the year, only for the cycle to repeat.

Don't fight the seasons. Relish them. There's a time to go slow and a time to go fast.

Check out Mr. Sharma's fantastic book here(affiliate link) https://amzn.to/2VI6RB6

I even made a dance video about this..see that below. Which you can see here https://youtu.be/hny8BRgdLYY

I met Jozee last summer(2019). A mutual friend started bringing her to the dancehall parties I would attend. She gave me a good vibe and was open to learning about our community.

Listening to Jozee reminds me of my enthusiasm when I was introduced to dancehall. In my teens(late 80s-90s), I'd go to neighborhood basement parties where hip hop, house music, RnB played. There would always be a reggae segment. I thought it was cool, but didn't grab my attention as it does now.

In the early 2000s, I would religiously go to Club Speeed in NYC, every Sunday. DJ Mister Cee would play the latest and greatest hip hop. He as well would have a small reggae segment. But it was current dancehall and soca, which I wasn't exposed to. This wasn't 'Murder She Wrote,' or 'Twice My Age.' But Busy Signal, Elephant Man, and a new artist called Ding Dong with his tune 'Badman Forward, Badman Pullup.'

When these songs would come on, I noticed the crowd's energy peak. What hooked me were the dance moves done to the particular songs. I quickly followed along. A neighborhood dance group saw my enthusiasm and took me under their wing and taught me some basics regarding the dancehall/Jamaican culture.

A great lesson I've learned; spend time with people who have years invested in your interest or passion. This will help make leaps and gains in your knowledge base, which will save you time and frustration. Jozee is doing this by hanging around us, taking classes, and going to parties. I inadvertently did the same many years back; you can do the same now with your particular passion or interest.

Jason G and I both work in the NYC hotel industry; unfortunately, we were recently furloughed due to the Coronavirus. We agreed to keep in touch every week, check-in, share what we're watching or reading(specifically comic books). I asked him, 'have you seen Tiger King yet?' I'd seen it a week earlier and haven't talked to someone to share my thoughts. He told me his wife and daughter were watching it, and while he was doing chores around the house, it kept grabbing his attention.

One week later, he's consumed the entire series, and we are here to chat about it. There are spoilers.

We review this Netflix original based on its entertainment value. Jason compliments the director(Eric Goode)for showing the good and bad sides of the cast; Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin, Doc Antle. I mention related news I discovered after watching Tiger King. Such as Netflix filming new content to be released in April. Also, Joe Exotic's music being sung by other individuals.

We repeatedly mention our disbelief in the situations presented in this documentary. 'This is crazy, is this real?'

Netflix now displays its current most popular content with a top ten ranking system. Tiger King, on multiple occasions, has been #1(in the U.S.). The Investigation Discovery network has announced a true crime 'spin-off' based on Carole Baskin. Joe Exotic's nemesis in Tiger King. That series will dig deeper into her husband's disappearance, leaving her with millions. A Hollywood adaptation of this story is inevitable.

Hopefully, these streaming services(Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Now) will give us viewers more material of this caliber. It will make for a great way to pass the time for all of us either furloughed, unemployed, or sheltering in place.

The next time Jason and I get together we will be reviewing 2018's Overlord. It's now available on Hulu and Amazon Prime. You can also find out more about the film and see it here https://amzn.to/3aTe1ZD
