Kengor discusses the shock inside and outside the Catholic world when an American cardinal emerged from the conclave after just four ballots, defying long-standing expectations that the papacy would never go to an American.

He explains how the new pope’s decades of international service in Latin America and Rome helped convince cardinals he could lead the global church while still reflecting American roots. Kengor also contrasts the new pontiff’s measured and unifying leadership style with the turbulence of the previous era, arguing that many cardinals were seeking stability, humility, and a renewed focus on unity within the church after years of internal tension and debate.
