Mornings with Brian Haldane

Paul Sawyer

Listen Later

Yesterday, the Amite River Basin Commission held their monthly meeting and approved a master plan aimed at addressing the persistent flooding issues in the region. Paul Sawyer discussed the significance of this plan, emphasizing that it is not just another document to be shelved but a proactive approach to mitigate flooding.

The plan is backed by over $100 million already allocated for immediate use.The master plan is particularly noteworthy because it involves collaboration among seven parishes, which have reached a consensus and are committed to working together on various projects. If fully implemented by 2050, the plan is expected to halve the average annual flood damage costs and update flood maps to remove 30,000 structures from flood zones, potentially saving homeowners $25 million annually in flood insurance premiums. One of the key projects mentioned is the Comet River Diversion Canal, which has been in development for decades and is expected to be completed by 2029. The plan also includes the Upper Amite Flood Risk Reduction and Restoration project, which aims to restore the natural meandering of the Amite River to slow down floodwaters and improve drainage in East Baton Rouge, Livingston, and Ascension Parishes.Another significant project is the Bayou Manchac Flood Risk Reduction project, which involves rerouting Wards Creek and raising the Perkins Road Bridge to prevent backwater flooding and siltation.

This project is crucial for efficient drainage in East Baton Rouge, Ascension, and Iberville Parishes.Livingston Parish President Randy Delatte highlighted the historic cooperation and consensus among the parishes and commissioners, which is essential for the successful implementation of these transformational projects. The 2016 flood exposed the flaws in the Amite River basin's drainage system, underscoring the need for a coordinated and systematic approach to flood management. In summary, the master plan approved by the Amite River Basin Commission represents a significant step forward in addressing the region's flooding issues through collaborative efforts and substantial financial investment.
