Utterly familar verses are sometimes the most misunderstood... tyring to offer some context to the verse and surrounding verses that help us understand the whole story of God.

Rules are important.  The early scriptures are even centered upon a series of rules.  However, the rules were never really the point.  Fr. Paul uses a story about parents who realize this along the way.
