Paul’s Constant Prayer

Listen Later

When was the last time someone told you, “I will pray for you”? It is a blessing to be on the receiving end of intercessory prayers. Amazingly, even while Paul was under house arrest in Rome, he was praying for others. The beginning of his letter to the church at Colossae, is genuinely positive and upbeat. He says, “We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you” (v. 3).

Paul had heard of the Colossians’ faith in Christ and the love they had for God’s people. He expresses his gratitude for their faith and love that come from the hope stored for them in heaven. But Paul’s thanksgiving list doesn’t stop there. In verse 7, he gives constant thanks for Epaphras from whom the Colossians heard and received the gospel. Finally, he gives thanks to the Father, who has qualified them “to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness” (vv. 12–13).

At the end of the chapter (v. 24), Paul gives more insight into why he is so thankful while imprisoned. “Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.” Paul did not ask for prayers for his release (although there would be nothing wrong with that request). Instead, he focuses on God’s people and their faith in Christ. He is rejoicing that, in his suffering, he can become more Christlike and build up the church of Christ.

Paul experienced the joy of ministry despite his circumstances because of his view of Christ’s suffering. By following His example, Paul’s selfless service created an attitude of gratitude in ministry rather than a pity party.
