  • Why Crypto Payments Will Replace Banks

Most stablecoin volume is not payments. By Jamal Raees's own estimate, 70 to 90% of it is settlement for trading and speculation. So how does real payments infrastructure get built on top of it, and who wins the stablecoin wars?Jamal is GM of Payments at the Solana Foundation, two weeks into the role at recording. Before that: BitPay, Square, Wyre, Bridge, Stable.com and Polygon. Paul Afshar asks him the spicy questions the stablecoin hype skips. In this episode:- How family remittances taking 6 weeks at 7 to 15% fees pushed him into crypto payments- Stablecoins vs tokenized deposits, explained simply- Why banks and card networks launch their own stablecoins when USDC exists- Where MiCA, GENIUS and CLARITY are still incomplete, and why he says "upgrade", not "disrupt"- What a new on-ramp or off-ramp company should build first, and why compliance is the cornerstoneChapters:00:00 Meet Jamal Raees00:50 A decade in crypto across BitPay, Square, Wyre, Bridge, Polygon and Solana01:45 The moment payments clicked03:34 Has crypto drifted from its original promise?05:42 The mandate: what does success look like for Solana payments?06:44 Building a new economy takes more than payments skills08:49 MiCA, GENIUS, CLARITY and educating regulators12:20 What the $5 trillion stablecoin figure really means13:53 Stablecoin use cases beyond corporate treasury15:35 Stablecoins vs tokenized deposits19:45 Are the stablecoin wars still on?20:31 Why banks want their own stablecoin instead of USDC22:33 Starting a payments company today: chains, compliance, rails25:20 Wrap-up#stablecoins #payments #Solana #tokenization #MiCA

  • Identity Is Behavior: Why ID Verification Is Dead in the Fight Against AI Fraud

AI-driven fraud is scaling faster than most defenses. In this episode, Paul Afshar talks to Pascal Podvin, founder and CRO of Nsure.ai, about why the old playbook is failing.

Pascal explains why fraud should be treated as a business metric, not something to eliminate, and why 80% of fraud in crypto comes from verified accounts. He argues that digital identity authentication is dead and that identity is now behavior. We also cover:

    • How AI lets one fraudster reach 50 million people instead of 50
    • Why intent matters more than telling humans from agents in the age of agentic commerce
    • Why a dedicated model per customer beats consortium data
    • How a liability-sharing, pay-on-value model changes the vendor relationship
    • Why authorized push payment fraud is the next big problem, and how regulation is shifting liability to banks and PSPs

  • 70% of Fraud Happens After KYC - Thomas Taraniuk, Sumsub

You verified them. They passed. That's when the fraud starts.

Thomas Taraniuk is Head of Partnerships at Sumsub and host of the What The Fraud? podcast. He joins Paul to make a claim that should reorganise most risk teams' priorities: around 70% of fraud happens after the initial KYC check — which means the industry has spent a decade fortifying the one door attackers no longer need to walk through.

What's coming through instead is industrialised. Deepfakes you can buy online for five dollars. A jump of over 700%. And multi-step attacks climbing from 10% to 28% of all identity fraud, run by resource-intensive, multilayered AI fraud agents that, as Thomas puts it, operate exactly like legitimate humans — like me and you.

Then the part that lands closest to home: waking up to a message saying your agent is trying to purchase something.

    In this episode:
    • Why post-KYC monitoring, not onboarding, is where the risk actually lives
    • The economics of cheap deepfakes and what that does to liveness checks
    • Multi-step attacks: fraud as an orchestrated chain, not a single event
    • What changes when both the attacker and the customer are AI agents
    • Where behavioural and telemetry signals fit when documents can't be trusted

  • 23 Years in Finance, One Verdict on Web3 - Giovanni Everduin

99% of Web3 projects made zero revenue last year. Zero. Meanwhile VCs poured $7.7B into the space in a single quarter. So is the smart money backing the 1% that works - or is the whole model broken?

On this episode of the Paybis No BS Podcast, host Paul Afshar sits down with Giovanni Everduin, a 23-year finance veteran who built a Web3 venture inside a traditional bank, to unpack what’s really driving the numbers - and what most people are getting wrong about where Web3 value actually gets created.

  • Why Institutions Are Finally Entering Web3 (And Why Most Startups Fail the Gate) - Michael Borowiec.

JPMorgan is live on Ethereum. Franklin Templeton is tokenizing money market funds. Mastercard is building on-chain payment rails.
The institutions that Web3 spent a decade trying to disrupt are now actually at the table. But they brought a gate list, and most Web3 startups are failing it.
Not because their product is bad, because they didn’t exist in a way that institutions’ legal teams can sign off.
My guest today has sat on both sides of that gate.
