Call to Worship: 1 Chronicles 16:8-12 (NIV v. 13 adapted)
8 Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done.9 Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts.10 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.11 Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.12 Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,13 you his servants, the spiritual seed of Abraham, his chosen ones, faithful disciples of Jesus.
Scripture Reading: Psalm 33:10-20 (NIV)
10 The Lord foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.13 From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind;14 from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth—15 he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.
16 No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save.18 But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,19 to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.
20 We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.
Scripture Text: Genesis 42:1-38 (ESV)
I. Leaving Canaan: Jacob Sends Ten Sons to Egypt (42:1-5)1 When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” 2 And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.” 3 So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers, for he feared that harm might happen to him. 5 Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
II. In Egypt Before Joseph (42:6-26)A. Joseph recognizes his brothers (6-8)6 Now Joseph was governor over the land. He was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. 7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.” 8 And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
He who withholds grain, the people will curse him,But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it. (Prov 11:26)
B. Joseph accuses his brothers of being spies (42:9-17)1. Joseph’s accusations (9-13)9 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them. And he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land.” 10 They said to him, “No, my lord, your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all sons of one man. We are honest men. Your servants have never been spies.” 12 He said to them, “No, it is the nakedness of the land that you have come to see.” 13 And they said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.”
2. Joseph’s test (14-17) 14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you. You are spies. 15 By this you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and le
