Today I found myself sitting in my car, watching life unfold in a quiet suburban neighborhood. Families rode bikes together. Neighbors stopped to talk. Seniors jogged down peaceful streets. Birds chirped. People simply enjoyed being outside.
What surprised me wasn't what I saw. It was what I felt.
For years, I've dedicated much of my life to serving communities, advocating for neighborhoods, and believing in the power of collective change. I still believe in that work. But as I sat there watching ordinary life happen, I came face-to-face with an uncomfortable truth: I want that kind of peace for myself too.
Not because I'm better than anyone. Not because I've stopped loving where I come from. But because I've realized there's a difference between loving a community and wanting a certain quality of life.
This episode is a reflection on peace, belonging, walkability, quiet streets, and the permission we sometimes need to give ourselves to want something different for the next chapter of our lives.
Maybe what I was feeling wasn't jealousy at all.
Maybe it was clarity.
Maybe the most important thing I admitted that day wasn't that I admired the neighborhood. It was that I finally allowed myself to say out loud that I want that kind of peace too.
Have you ever realized you wanted something different for your next chapter? What did that realization feel like? Share your thoughts in the comments.
