  • 46 | Drowning in Booklists? A Charlotte Mason Guide to Choosing Subjects

If you've ever sat down to plan your homeschool year with six different booklists spread out on the table and no idea where to even begin, this episode is for you. My daughter had her atmosphere and her honest capacity already written down, and she still felt completely overwhelmed the moment she got to actual subjects. Today I show her, and you, a simpler way through.

I introduce St. Albert the Great, patron of scientists and one of the most widely learned minds in the history of the Church, who held an enormous breadth of subjects without ever losing his footing in any of them.

    In this episode:

    • What a "spine" actually is, and why one steady book beats six scattered ones
    • Why the CM arts, nature study, poetry, music, art, handicrafts, don't need the same heavy structure as history and science
    • St. Albert the Great's example of holding many subjects without collapsing them into confusion
    • A simple exercise to pick your one spine for history and one for science this week

  • 45 | Stretched Too Thin? What St. Zelie Martin Teaches You About Homeschool Capacity

If you've ever felt guilty for admitting your homeschool year has limits, this episode is for you. We're continuing the planning series my daughter and I have been walking through together, atmosphere, and now capacity, the honest question of what your family, and each of your children, can actually hold this year.

I introduce St. Zélie Martin, a real working mother who ran her own lace-making business and raised the family that gave the Church St. Thérèse of Lisieux, and who wrote candidly in her own letters about exhaustion and limits. Her life is proof that a stretched, honest capacity, faithfully lived, is still exactly where holiness grows.

    In this episode:

    • Why naming your limits isn't giving up, it's planning in step with the grace you actually have
    • Why capacity is a per child question, not just a family-level one
    • St. Zélie Martin's real, unfiltered life as a mother running a home and a business at once
    • A simple, practical exercise to write your own honest capacity answers this week

    Scripture referenced: 2 Corinthians 12:9

  • 44 | Feeling Chaotic? Naming Your Charlotte Mason Homeschool Atmosphere

If you have ever sat down to plan your homeschool year and felt the pressure to have it all figured out before you even open a single book, this one is for you.

In this episode of Peaceful Catholic Homeschooling, we talk about naming the atmosphere of your homeschool year before you ever choose a subject or a spine. And we do it alongside two saints who understood something about hidden faithfulness. Saint Joseph, who never spoke a single recorded word in Scripture and yet the Church calls him Terror of Demons and Patron of Peace. And Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, who found holiness not in grand gestures but in her Little Way, the small hidden faithfulness of ordinary days.

Saint Joseph's silence was not passivity. It was strength, standing guard over his home. And Saint Thérèse teaches us that the atmosphere we build in the smallest, most uncertain seasons still counts. I think that is exactly the permission so many of us need right now.

    What You'll Learn:

    • Why the atmosphere of your home matters more than any subject or spine you choose
    • What Charlotte Mason meant when she said education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life
    • Why St. Joseph's silence in Scripture was strength and not passivity
    • How St. Joseph earned the title Terror of Demons and what that means for guarding your home
    • What St. Thérèse's Little Way teaches about building atmosphere in seasons of uncertainty or transition
    • One simple way to name the atmosphere you want your home to hold this year

    Scripture:

    • Matthew 1:24 — When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him
    • Philippians 4:7 — And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus

    Catechism:

    • CCC 1655 — The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit
    • CCC 2223 — Parents have a grave responsibility to give good example to their children

    Resources:

    • Litany of St. Joseph
    • Story of a Soul by St. Thérèse of Lisieux

  • 43 | Grab Your Rosary: What to Do When Your Catholic Charlotte Mason Homeschool Day Falls Apart

After thirty four years in education I want to tell you something I wish someone had told me much earlier. The little voice that tells you that you are behind, that you are not doing enough, that everyone else has it figured out and you do not, that voice is lying to you. In this episode of Peaceful Catholic Homeschooling I talk honestly about the little voice that steals Catholic homeschool moms' joy, what to do when your day falls completely apart, and how St Monica, Mother Teresa's flying novena, and Our Blessed Mother herself have carried me through the hardest homeschool moments. This episode is for every Catholic homeschool mom who has ever looked at a perfect Instagram homeschool and felt completely deflated.

    What You'll Learn:

    • Why the little voice is not telling you the truth and where it actually comes from

    • The story of St Monica and what seventeen years of faithful waiting teaches Catholic homeschool moms
    • Mother Teresa's flying novena and the extraordinary story of the rain stopping in Rome
    • Why Mary said yes before she understood and what that means for your homeschool
    • Why you are not running the same race as anyone else and what your real finish line looks like

    • Philippians 4:8 — Fix your minds on whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable
    • Luke 1:38 — Be it done to me according to your word

    • CCC 2219 — The virtue of piety disposes us to give God the worship owed to him
    • CCC 2573 — God hears the prayer of those who persevere

  • 41 | Is Your Catholic Homeschool Just School at Home? Here Is What Charlotte Mason Really Looks Like

You pulled your children out of school or chose never to send them in the first place because you wanted something different. Something richer, slower, and more rooted in your faith. So why does your homeschool day still feel like school? In this episode of Peaceful Catholic Homeschooling I talk honestly about why the school at home trap happens, where the fear of falling behind actually comes from, and what Charlotte Mason really looks like in a Catholic home when you finally let go of the page by page mentality that is quietly draining your joy.

    What You'll Learn:

    • Why the school at home trap is rooted in fear not wisdom
    • The difference between spiraling curriculum like Saxon Math and mastery based curriculum like Math U See and why it changes everything about how you pace your day
    • What Charlotte Mason actually meant by the single idea and why moving at the pace of genuine understanding matters more than finishing the page
    • What progress really looks like in a Catholic Charlotte Mason home
    • How the Catholic vision of the child as a person made in the image and likeness of God completely reframes what doing more actually means

  • 39 | Struggling to Build Your Homeschool Day? A Catholic Charlotte Mason Rhythm That Actually Works

You understand the philosophy. You know what living books are and why narration matters. But you still cannot picture what an actual Catholic Charlotte Mason day looks like in a real home with real children. Charlotte Mason taught that education rests on three pillars, atmosphere, discipline, and life, and a real day begins with all three working together, even on the hard days.

    What You'll Learn:

    • Why atmosphere comes before schedule in a real Catholic Charlotte Mason home
    • What a faithful Catholic Charlotte Mason morning actually looks like from prayer through lessons
    • How Charlotte Mason's short focused lessons work in a real home with real children
    • Why your rhythm is allowed to bend when life asks something different of you
    • How to slow down, lean in, and trust that it is enough

    Scripture:

    • 1 Corinthians 14:33 — "God is not a God of disorder but of peace"
    • Luke 5:16 — Jesus himself withdrew to quiet places to rest and pray
    • Colossians 3:17 — "Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus"

  • 38 | The Liturgical Year as Your Curriculum Spine: A Catholic Charlotte Mason Approach

The liturgical year was never meant to be decoration on top of your homeschool. Charlotte Mason believed education should follow a generous curriculum, a rich and varied feast of ideas organized around one true center. For us as Catholics, that center has been sitting in plain sight the whole time. When the liturgical year becomes the spine of your homeschool rather than something you add on top of it, everything changes.

    What You'll Learn:

    • Why the liturgical year is the organizing spine of your Catholic Charlotte Mason homeschool, not the decoration
    • How history, nature study, and language arts hang naturally on the liturgical year
    • Why a small handful of living books is more powerful than one single textbook marching through the year
    • How the Church has already organized your entire school year for you
    • What it looks like when your homeschool feels unified instead of scattered

    Scripture:

    • Ecclesiastes 3:1 — "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven"
    • Psalm 90:12 — "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom"

    Catechism:

    • CCC 1163 — The liturgical year unfolds the whole mystery of Christ and sanctifies time itself
