Just as parents are called to lay the foundation of faith in their kids and teach them to follow God, we are all called to help cultivate faith in others (our friends, family, etc.). Parents can do this by tending to the hearts of their children and by being present in their lives, allowing them to lovingly extend truth and grace when their children struggle with sin. We help others by listening to their hearts and pointing them to Jesus with truth and grace.

Adam and Eve failed to tend to Cain’s heart, allowing envy, jealousy, and resentment to fester, resulting in murder. Their lack of presence and guidance led to catastrophe and severe consequences for both of their sons. Similar things will happen if we fail to be present and tend to people’s hearts.Our families and friendships do not exist primarily for our happiness but for our holiness and spiritual growth. This biblical truth applies to all of us in our relationships, whether we are parents or not.

For families to thrive, they must fulfill God’s purpose. The very first family in the Garden of Eden was given the command to fill the earth with the goodness and love of God (Genesis 1:28). Jesus expands on this by calling all people to “make disciples” (Matthew 28:19-20). Therefore, our families do not exist for ourselves, our successes, and happiness but to bless others by serving and pointing them to Jesus. Our families cannot be blessed until we begin living out and fulfilling God’s purpose to bless others by making disciples.

The serpent (Satan) was able to deceive Adam and Eve by successfully getting them to question God’s word. God’s desire is for our families to be blessed. It is important to have His word firmly planted in our hearts and our homes.
