We usually don’t handle living in obscurity and being rejected by others well. Oftentimes, these experiences cause us to become angry and bitter. Although these initial emotions are normal, God allows the rejection we experience by man to teach us to rely solely on His love—which always accepts us, affirms us, and calls us to greatness. We will all wrestle with sin and temptation throughout our lives. David’s fall serves as a powerful reminder for us to 1) keep our spiritual guards up no matter how powerful and successful we become, and 2) that God is always merciful and redemptive when we confess and repent of our sin.

David experienced another defining moment when he attempted to bring the Ark of the Covenant (a holy artifact that housed the presence of God on Earth) into Jerusalem. David made it a practice to always inquire of the Lord before doing anything. This time, he did not. God prepares us for His purpose through challenging situations, including mistreatment and persecution. How we respond to the abuse of others will determine our future. After David killed Goliath, he became Israel’s hero. The current king, Saul, became immensely jealous and tried to kill David on several occasions causing him to flee for his life. On at least two occasions, David had the opportunity to kill Saul and end his persecution once and for all. David’s response was a decisive turning point.

Living a life of greatness often starts with the little things. God can and will use seemingly insignificant moments to prepare us for the significant purpose He has for our lives. However, it’s easy to miss the meaning in the mundane. If we are faithful with the little things, we will be prepared to face the “giants” of life with a spirit of faith instead of fear.
