Episode 34 features an interview with sex worker, activist, producer, and director Liara Roux. We talk to them about their activism around internet freedom for sex workers, starting with their "Open Letter to Patreon." And, on a more personal note, we discuss their recent Motherboard article, "Coming Out as a Sex Worker, Coming Out as a Person" and the impact it had on their personal life and career.
But, first, we reflect on our first year of podcasting adventures. We also talk about our current fundraising campaign to cover AVN in January, as well as some of our hopes for 2019.
Episode 33 features an interview with fellow sex podcasters Nicoletta Heidegger and Simone from Sluts and Scholars. They talk to us about why they started a sex podcast and how they've negotiated it in their professional lives. We also discuss the important work they are respectively doing in the areas of reproductive advocacy and therapy.
For our news segment, we discuss the recent misogynistic viral campaign #ThotAudit, which threatened to turn sex workers in to the Internal Revenue Services.
Episode 32 features an interview with NYC based dominatrix, full spectrum doula, and sex worker rights advocate Danelle Blunt. We discuss the work that she did with Persist Health Project, connecting those who work in the sex trades with affirming health care services. We also examine the way that stigma impacts health care and some strategies that sex workers and other marginalized communities employ in order to get the care they need. We also talk about the value of doulas.
For our news segment, we highlight a recently published Slate article by Phoebe Friesen titled, "Why Are Pelvic Exams on Unconscious, Unconsenting Women Still Part of Medical Training?" The article explores the ethics of medical students doing pelvic exams on women without their permission or knowledge.
Episode 31 features an interview with Pittsburgh-based Alt.Black artist and spoken word poet Christina Springer. Her new book, The Splooge Factory, comes out on Frayed Edge Press this month. It is a collection of poetry exploring her experiences as a receptionist in a "happy endings" massage parlor in Pittsburgh, PA. We talk to her about her experience at the massage parlor; her own history and art; love and intimacy; race, eroticism, and sex work; and motherhood and aging.
Episode 30 features an interview with sex worker, activist, and writer Lorelei Lee. We discuss her article, "Once You Have Made Pornography," which describes the many ways sex work stigma manifests and its impacts your life. We also talk about strategies for combatting stigma and how sex workers rely on each other for support and affirmation.
For our news segment, Julian Gill-Peterson, author of Histories of the Transgender Child, joins us to discuss the Trump administration's recent memo instructing government agencies to no longer recognize trans identities.
In Episode 29, we interview professor Laura Helen Marks and discuss her new book, Alice in Pornoland: Hardcore Encounters with the Victorian Gothic, which explores Victorian and Gothic literature's connection to past and present pornography. We also talk about her tortoise, and her thoughts about anti-porn feminism.
In Episode 28 we interview sex worker, mother, and cannabis activist Kimberlee Cline. October marks her 20th year in the sex industry. She reflects on her career, the history of the sex workers rights movement, and its connection to cannabis activism. Before we talk to Kimberlee, we discuss an article from Future of Sex that reports on increased interest in non-monogamy.
In Episode 27 we interview Vera Sky, XBIZ's 2017 Cam Model of the Year. We talk to her about her life and her career. We also tackle issues of race, body size, and representation, as well as what it is like to be a sex worker in middle America. But, before we do that, we reflect on what Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearings have signified for women in this country.
Episode 26 is a special episode, brought to you from Eyebeam in Brooklyn, NYC. We cover Hacking//Hustling: A Platform for Sex Workers in a Post SESTA World with a combination of interviews and captured audio.
We discuss the need for a sex worker centered tech conferences with Ingrid Burrington, an Eyebeam art resident who helped to facilitate the event. We then move to footage of the sex worker panel that kicked off the event. We feature snippets of Tina Horn, Lorelei Lee, Danielle Blunt, and Melissa Gira Grant.
We also talk to Brit Schulte, who curated the Whores Will Rise: Protest Art and Resistant Ephemera Against FOSTA/SESTA, the art exhibit running in conjunction with the event; and we talk to Joanna Gould and Sally Szwed, Eyebeam staff.
Finally, we bring you three longer interviews. First, we talk to Sophie Searcy from t4tech, about digital hygiene; second, to sex worker Tourma, and her client Rick about their trip to the conference together; and, lastly, to Danielle Blunt and Melissa Gira Grant about their reflections on the conference as a whole.
In Episode 25 we interview the Rev. Dr. Beverly Dale about her sex positive Christian ministry. We talk about her personal history with the Church, and how she came to believe that the Church is on the wrong side of sexual politics. We also talk about sex work as a form of ministry.
