I run my PeerTube instance at my parents house on a NUC.They only have 10 Mbit uplinkThey live in Germany and I'm far away in South Korea on a different continentSometimes it takes a lot of time to start the videoSometimes the video stuttersIt might not be a problem if I used a real serverBut that is expensiveI'm already hosting almost 40 GB and it will only grow with timeWhen several people wath the same video then peer to peer kicks inYou share your bandwidth and upload for other peopleBut when you're the only one watching especially on a small instance like mine then p2p doesn't kick in and you see the problems mentioned before. Now that you know what the problem is, what is the solution?PeerTube has the concept of "Redundancy" between instancesBut how do I get other server administrators to donate expensive hard drive space?I have still space left on my laptop at homeThe laptop is (almost) always connected to ethernet with a cableThe laptop has a static IP in my internal networkI installed a PeerTube instance on my laptop following the Arch wikis documentationI configured the PeerTube instanceEspecially the rudundancy:I have a Duck DNS subdomain which always points to my home even if the IP address changes, which it didn't in the last 7 monthsI made it available on the internet with a https domain with help of letsencryptOn the new instance I followed my main instanceI checked the "Redundancy allowed" and it started pulling down the most viewed videosLet's check out the difference between a video which does not have many views - and thus will not be made redundantWe see here the problems with the long time to start the video and the stuttering because there is only one peer sharing it, it is the main instance server itselfAnd now one with many views - which will be redundant on the new instance which caches up to 10 GB, so 1/4 of the videos from the main instanceWe see here that it starts imediatelly and doesn't stutter at allBut you might ask: "What happens if you disconnect your laptop because you need to take it with you?"Great quastion, not much happensI'm not hosting any videos on this instancejust replicating videos from a different oneIf this new instance is not available only the one redundancy is removedOnce I connect it back it is available againThis solution is not for everyone, but I have this special case where:I'm on a different continent than my PeerTube instance (Europe and Asia)I'm already running my main instance from my parents homeI already know how to host a PeerTube instance at homeI already have a running computer with space availableTherefor it was kind of natural to do it this wayI don't need to spent any extra money which is greatThat is it, leave a like and subscribe and see you next time
