Ebola - das tödliche Virus ist zurück und wütet derzeit in einer extremen Intensität und enormen Wucht in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo in Zentralafrika. Mittlerweile ist die Rede von rund 300 Menschen, die pro Woche sterben, mehr als 60 Prozent davon zu Hause in ihren Betten.

Diese Menschen können Behandlungszentren gar nicht mehr erreichen und die Gefahr der weiteren Verbreitung ist enorm. Es sind traurige Rekordzahlen und offenbar ist Ebola in der Region völlig außer Kontrolle geraten.

Wie konnte es überhaupt zu diesem Ausbruch kommen? Warum ist die DR Kongo derart betroffen? Was wird vor Ort getan, in einem Land, in dem seit Jahrzehnten Krieg herrscht? Gibt es Hoffnung auf neue Impfstoffe und auf weitere Unterstützung?

Darüber spricht Tanja Tricarico aus dem Auslandsressort der taz mit Simone Schlindwein, der taz-Korrespondentin für das Gebiet der Großen Seen und Ostafrika.
