The true worship of God always necessitates confronting the world. This is well illustrated in the ministry of Moses and in how he fearlessly challenged the most powerful man in the then known world, namely Pharaoh.

The Lord Jesus Christ came and ministered to this world by means of water and by blood, to cleanse men by water, that is, by the Holy Spirit, and to shed His blood to pay the penalty for men's sins. Human beings preach the Gospel, but it is the Holy Spirit who speaks to the unbeliever's heart, drawing him or her to the Saviour. It is the Holy Spirit who shows to the sinner the centrality of the water and the blood of Christ, the centrality of the Spirit’s cleansing power and of the power of Christ’s blood to atone for the sions of the world. This threefold witness of the Spirit, the water and the blood is God’s witness to all people today.

This passage is teaching us that :

1. The Jewish Christians had to consider the imminent destruction of Jerusalem.

2. We likewise must be mentally alert and on our guard because of imminent judgement.

3. We must be earnestly praying because of imminent judgement.

4. We must be fervently loving because of imminent judgement. 5. We must be fervently working within the body of Christ because of imminent judgement.

5. Those who have followed Christ faithfully and suffered for His sake will be vindicated when He comes as Judge.

Then will He be able to say to the faithful believer, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

What an exalted calling Timothy hasd as a pastor of God’s flock. Nevertheless, all believers in their respective secular callings carry on their work to the glory of God, and possess gifts for the nurturing and general well-being of the body of Christ.

Both pastor and people must work together using their gifts, working out their own salvation in fear and trembling, and with the goal of seeing many others around them saved.

The pastor must speak with authority, which the people must honour. He must be a teacher, and the people must be willing to learn. How he must take heed to himself and to his own holiness and walk with the Lord that he might be an example of holiness to the flock.

What a powerful tool in the hands of the Lord is the pastor and his flock working together in love, straining every sinew that the lost might be saved.

This sermon was preached the day after the Christian witness at the 2024 Manchester Pride parade.

In this passage Jeremiah is foretelling the devastation which is going to come upon Judah as a result of her rebellion against God. Judah was ceasing to trust him for her national security, but instead was turning to alliances with other nations. Our nation today is living in rebellion against God and is seeking their security in this world, whereas the Gospel requires that they leave this world's sin and false philosophies. How tragic it is that men reject the gospel of Christ, which would give them a perfect security for all eternity. How they should learn to fear God, for "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom". Through the Gospel our Lord is calling upon our nation to bear fruit for him. He is offering us the potential to be choice, productive vines. God is not willing that any should perish. He seeks only man’s eternal good. So our plea to all men today is, Stop ignoring your God. Come to Christ for mercy and eternal life. Stop being a degenerate plant and become a choice, fruit-bearing vine in which God delights.

We see in these two verses Satan standing at Joshua's right hand in order to resist him as he leads the work to rebuild the Temple. This tells us that Satan is the chief opponent of God’s work, then, and in any age.

There is, therefore, Satanic opposition to the building of the true church today. All perversions of Christianity, and all false religions, are satanic in their origin, and all unbelievers are in a universal allegiance to Satan himself, even though they do not realise it.

The Devil is active right now in opposing men’s reception of Gospel truth. It is only through faith in Christ that his hold over the hearts of men can ever be broken, for at the Cross a way of escape from the Devil’s clutches was opened up.

Gospel preaching, therefore, is part of a cosmic spiritual conflict whereby demonic forces are challenged and overcome. Let us accordingly engage in earnest prayer, for “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but … the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12).

What privileges they possess who are citizens of the kingdom of heaven. God dwells in their heart by the power of the Holy Spirit, they have received new life, their condemnation from the guilt of sin is removed, and they shall now live for evermore. So what precious treasure belongs to those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. To know Him is to possess the pearl of great price. Nothing can compare in value. Let us count all other things in this passing world but loss that we might know Christ and receive Hosd great salvation.

The Christian gospel calls upon all people today to strive to enter into Christ's kingdom and so obtain the priceless treasure which infinitely outweighs anything that this world could ever offer.
