David asks in Ps 15:1, “Who may dwell in your sacred tent?” He likely refers to the tabernacle, the place where God resided in Israel, but the tabernacle represents life in the presence of God. In Deuteronomy 28, God delivers a chilling warning to Israel. This is a chapter filled with curses for disobedience—but when we get to verse 47, the reason for those curses is especially unsettling. Some Christians claim that those people whom God sends to hell cease to exist, that they do not endure eternal, conscious torment. This is typically referred to as annihilationism. What does the Bible teach about the eternal punishment of evildoers? This study briefly examines some of the claims of annihilationists and then makes a case for the so-called traditional view of hell.
