Cervical cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in Nepal. Every year above 2,300 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 1,200 women die.

But do you know that various screening techniques have been introduced for the early detection of cervical cancer in Nepal? The screening tests are saviors for the reduction of incidence and mortality. Senior Gyane-Oncologist Dr. Sarita Ghimire suggests that women get their Visual inspection of the cervix with acetic acid (VIA) screening test from a trained health professional. Nepal is one of many countries that impose a 13 percent value added tax (VAT) on menstrual products like sanitary pads. The tax imposed as luxury items increases the cost of menstrual products and hinders affordable access. Lack of safe and affordable menstrual products forces menstruators to adopt poor menstrual hygiene practices and increases physical health risks.

Recently, a youth group 'Youth Congress Nepal' submitted a memorandum to Finance Ministry regarding the same. So, in this episode, we discuss about the importance of removing tax from period products. Access to basic menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facilities is critically important to the safety and dignity of the menstruating person. Clean menstrual products, a private place to change them, clean water and access to safe disposal is a fundamental requirement. In this context, we bring you a special episode dedicated to Menstrual Hygiene Day 2021, where we are having a conversation with Gunaraj Shrestha, national convener of MHM Alliance.

There are over 80 member organizations in this Alliance; the members are UN Agencies, Bilateral agencies, INGOs, NGOs, civil societies, media, researchers, activists. Menstruation is often misled as 'impurity' in Nepal imposing girls and women restrictions in activities like eating, sleeping, travelling and living a regular life. All these behavioural restrictions, aside from being untrue, contribute to gender-based taboos and discrimination.
