Persistence in Adversity with Dr. Adame

Wayne Williams, Wildlife Photographer shares some of his personal adversities, what has helped him overcome, educational pathway and faith walk. He also discusses how he discovered his passion for photography, the diverse wildlife adventures, the diverse hats he has worn throughout his life and the importance of resilience and dedication.

Dr. Qubbaj, mechanical engineer and Cool Dean, provides an overview of his childhood years and experiences growing up in the Middle East. Also, he emphasizes the importance of soft skills, what makes a good engineer, leader and knowing your purpose. He talks about finding your why and making a difference in the lives of others. He reveals how he earned the "Cool Dean" title. Dr. Qubbaj is the Dean of the College of Engineering & Computer Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Over the last several years, he has developed several initiatives (and grants) to increase the representation of women (and Latinas) in STEM careers. Dr. Qubbaj received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Dr. Luzelma Garza Canales, Associate Vice President of Leadership Learning & Activation at Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity, shares her story of growing up in a migrant working family and her efforts in improving education for students and Latino leaders.

Jonathan Medina grew up in a low income community in the United States in a single-parent household. He's mother was first incarcerated while he was in middle school, then again in high school. Jonathan was raised by his grandfather, but despite of these and numerous of other adversities he has become an amazing Youth Motivator and author!

Dr. Juan Mejia shares about his childhood growing up in South Texas, his experiences of being a first generation college student and his journey to becoming a college president.

Dr. Bagley, Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, shares his story about not knowing much of what college was, the need for mentors, setting goals and how to overcome career and personal adversities. He explains how finding his "why", study groups and the Lord helped him persist. Currently serves as Dean of STEM and Social Sciences at Yuba College in California.

Dr. Rosemond Moore, electrical engineer, shares about growing up in South Chicago, her challenges in the classroom and the obstacles she had to overcome while working in a non-traditional career. She shares her journey and the passion for what she does as well as the need to have mentors and the importance of goal setting.
