Perspectives Unsettled

On this podcast, we’ve talked a lot about how disciple-making is part of our identity as Christians. We’re all called by the Great Commission to participate in Jesus’ mission of bringing the Gospel to all people. But even when everyone agrees that this is something we should pursue, arguments about “How?” can stop any progress before we even get started.

So what is good missiology? How do our experiences influence our perspectives on missions? And why should every Christian make an effort to form their personal missiology?

For this conversation, we’re talking to our friend Amanda Brown from Lafayette, Colorado, where she’s the Global Outreach Coordinator of our partner Flatirons Church.

Perspectives Unsettled exists to challenge people. It’s literally in our name: we want to unsettle what has been stagnant, we want to challenge assumptions about faith and push people into taking Christianity seriously. What does it actually teach? Do we believe it, or not?

Being challenged is uncomfortable. And no one likes to go out of their way to make themselves intentionally uncomfortable. But it is important.

So - how do we challenge ourselves in an honest and healthy way? What does it take to shift from being challenged to changing, and what makes that so hard? And how do our opinions and beliefs and experiences mix with our concept of identity, and who God says we are?

A brief interlude in our normal posting routine.

In this episode, we talk with our friend and hospital chaplain, Carolyn Edwards, about: What, if anything, do I need to ‘do’ in order to really be a Christian? How do we deal with people who say they are Christian, but don’t seem to act very Christ-like? And how do we navigate self-inflicted guilt when our own actions fall short of what we think is asked of us?

Depending on who you talk to, Jesus is a historic figure, a moral teacher, a pop culture character, a myth, a God, or a punchline. Everyone who has heard of him has an opinion of who Jesus was. So, who was and is Jesus? What does it mean to be his follower? And what can we learn about his character from the Gospels?

We sit down with our friend and Uncharted board member Sarah Bourns to talk about the positive and negative realities in global missions. Are the outside criticism of missions valid? How do we approach short-term missions in a thoughtful and productive way?

This episode, we talk about the obstacles we face in missions work and the reputations that precede us. Do mission workers do more harm than good, even with righteous intentions? And do those intentions absolve them of responsibility? How do we introduce the gospel into a new culture without destroying it? And how can we advocate for international travel when it could be damaging our environment, especially in impoverished and developing areas?

Perspectives Unsettled exists to challenge our assumptions about faith, and move the average Christian from status-quo into boldness and action. In our first episode, we discuss the basics of missions. What does the American church consider “missions?” Do we have a responsibility to work to fulfill the Great Commission? And what does scripture tell us about how to pursue it?
