Welcome to another exciting episode of "Living the Wildlife" with your host, Steven Vantassel. We're thrilled to have you on board as part of the Pest Keek podcast family. In today's episode, we're diving deep into the world of rodent traps, sharing five game-changing strategies that will revolutionize your capture success.
Steven has been busy recording multiple episodes because, well, the kitty of videos was running a bit low. As we approach the holiday season, it's crucial to stay up-to-date with the latest insights in the field of wildlife control. So, don't forget to hit that subscribe button and ring the bell to get notified of our latest updates.
But wait, if you're not a fan of YouTube, no worries! You can also find us over on Rumble. Simply head to Rumble and search for "Wildlife Control Consultant." And for any inquiries, feel free to reach out to Steven at [email protected] or even at his old email address, [email protected].
Now, let's get into the nitty-gritty of today's discussion. We're delving into a fascinating research article from the 1990s. Specifically, it's from 1993 and authored by Mr. Jorgenson, Dearis, and Witor. The title alone is intriguing: "The Effect of Box Trap Design on Rodent Captures." This article, published in the Southwestern Naturalist (Volume 39, Issue 3, Pages 291-294), takes us on a journey to uncover whether box traps with solid walls are more or less effective at capturing rodents compared to cage traps.
In this episode, we explore why this research matters, especially for wildlife control professionals who want to improve their trapping techniques. We'll compare the Sherman trap, commonly used in small mammal surveys, with a cage trap, looking at dimensions and trigger sensitivity. The researchers used a paired trapping design, placing both types of traps at various locations to determine which trap attracted more rodents.
The study was extensive, with over a thousand trap nights in one location and several hundred in another. Trap nights, for those new to the term, refer to one trap left out for one night. So, the researchers had an abundance of data to work with.
The results, while not surprising, shed light on rodent behavior and trap preferences. Generally, the Sherman trap outperformed the cage trap in capturing small mammals. But why? Was it the dimensions, the design, or perhaps the trigger sensitivity? The researchers considered all these factors.
Join us as we unravel the findings of this study and discover the secrets to successful rodent trapping. We'll explore the nuances of trap design, sensitivity, and the importance of continuous learning in the wildlife control profession.
Plus, Steven encourages all wildlife control operators to take a leaf from this research's book and consider conducting their mini-studies. By understanding which traps work best in their specific areas and for different species, professionals can provide more effective solutions to their clients.
So, whether you're a seasoned wildlife control expert or a homeowner dealing with a rodent issue, this episode is packed with valuable insights. Don't miss it! And remember, we don't want you to be the wildlife—stay tuned and take care until next time!

Welcome to "Living the Wildlife," the podcast dedicated to unraveling the complexities of wildlife control. Hosted by wildlife control consultant Stephen Vantassel, this show is your go-to resource for resolving wildlife conflicts effectively.
Wildlife control is more critical than ever, especially in areas where urban development and natural habitats intersect. Whether it's raccoons rummaging through trash cans, skunks nesting under porches, or red foxes causing disturbances, wildlife conflicts are a common concern for homeowners and businesses alike.
The importance of wildlife control lies in maintaining a balance between humans and animals. While we share our environment with these creatures, sometimes they venture a little too close for comfort. Wildlife control allows us to coexist peacefully by mitigating conflicts and ensuring the safety of both humans and animals.
In this extended episode, we'll delve into bait dynamics in wildlife control. Bait is a critical component of trapping, but its effectiveness can vary greatly depending on environmental factors.
Temperature plays a significant role in how long bait remains effective. High temperatures can cause bait to spoil quickly, losing its scent and appeal. Low temperatures, on the other hand, can prolong the life of bait, giving you a better chance of attracting your target animals.
Sunlight can also impact bait. In hot, sunny conditions, bait can dry out and become less aromatic, affecting its attractiveness to wildlife. Humidity is another factor to consider, as it can impact how odors linger in the air.
In this episode, we also explore a fascinating study conducted by Rebecca E. Rusika and Michael R. Conover. This research focuses on the impact of wind and humidity on meso-predators, such as raccoons, skunks, and red foxes.
Meso-predators are unique because they rely heavily on their sense of smell to locate prey. Wind and humidity can significantly influence their ability to detect scent cues.
The researchers found that wind speed and direction played a pivotal role in a predator's ability to locate prey. On nights when the wind speed ranged from 2 to 9 miles per hour, meso-predators were more active and had a higher likelihood of spotting prey.
Understanding these findings can help wildlife control professionals strategically place traps to intercept animals' natural movements while taking advantage of prevailing winds.
As you continue your journey into the world of wildlife control, remember that knowledge is your greatest asset. By mastering bait dynamics and trap placement, you're well on your way to becoming a true professional in the field.
Thank you for joining us on "Living the Wildlife." Stay tuned for more insights and expertise on wildlife control, and don't forget to connect with us on Facebook and Rumble. We look forward to sharing this fascinating world with you.

In this enthralling episode of 'The Pestgeek Podcast,' listeners are treated to a deep and intimate conversation between Franklin 'the pestgeek' Hernandez and Christian Allen. The episode begins with Christian expressing his profound admiration for Franklin's podcast, a sentiment many of Franklin's listeners undoubtedly share. He commends the 'Pestgeek Podcast' for its role in stoking his curiosity and furthering his education in the field of pest control. Franklin modestly describes himself as more of a guide than a guru, someone who encourages his audience to ask questions and explore the vast realm of pest control.
As the conversation unfolds, a common thread emerges—the importance of having a clear endgame in mind. Franklin points out that many individuals embark on entrepreneurial journeys without a well-defined destination. They fail to ask themselves the fundamental question: Why are they building a business? Is it for personal satisfaction, financial growth, or perhaps an eventual exit strategy, like selling the business? These considerations are pivotal for charting a successful course in the pest control industry.
Christian's journey into entrepreneurship is a fascinating tale of reluctance and resilience. He candidly shares his experiences, providing a window into the challenges and triumphs he has encountered. At 53 years old, Christian possesses a wealth of life experiences that set him apart from many young entrepreneurs. He reflects on the unique hurdles he has faced throughout his entrepreneurial career, offering valuable insights to others who may be on a similar path.
The dialogue between Franklin and Christian underscores the critical role of mental well-being in entrepreneurship. Burnout is not a sign of weakness but rather a consequence of the dedication and determination that drive entrepreneurs to succeed. Christian's willingness to share his experiences with burnout serves as a powerful reminder that seeking help and prioritizing mental health are essential steps on the path to sustainable entrepreneurship.
Delegation emerges as a key theme in Christian's journey to overcome burnout and achieve sustainable growth. Recognizing that he couldn't continue doing everything himself, Christian devised a strategy to delegate tasks effectively to his team. Franklin applauds this shift in mindset, highlighting delegation as a fundamental pillar of long-term success for entrepreneurs.
One of the central lessons is the importance of continuous learning. Both Franklin and Christian emphasize that education doesn't stop once a business is established. Instead, it should be an ongoing pursuit. Franklin encourages entrepreneurs to stay curious, explore new avenues, and seek out knowledge that can benefit their businesses.
In closing, Franklin and Christian leave listeners with a profound message: Entrepreneurship is a journey filled with challenges, but it is also a path to personal and financial growth. With the right mindset, support, and a clear endgame, entrepreneurs can navigate these challenges and build thriving businesses that lead to a fulfilling future.

Welcome to "Living the Wildlife" with Wildlife Control Consultant Stephen Vantassel. In this installment, we're embarking on an enlightening journey into Alpha Chloralose, a cutting-edge rodenticide making waves in the realm of pest management across the United States.
Alpha Chloralose, though its name may be a tongue-twister, stands as a fascinating chemical compound. Emerging as a chlorinated acetal derivative rooted in glucose, a fundamental sugar molecule, it arrives in various user-friendly forms, including convenient paste baits and satchets. Its remarkable versatility and unique characteristics set it apart in the world of pest control.
Delving further, Alpha Chloralose is known by several names, but for simplicity, we'll consistently refer to it as Alpha Chloralose throughout our discussion. Originating in Europe, this rodenticide has a more established presence across the Atlantic, offering us a unique perspective on pest management solutions shaped by local challenges and regulations.
Understanding Alpha Chloralose's mode of action is crucial to appreciate its effectiveness. This remarkable rodenticide operates by affecting the central nervous system of the targeted rodents. Upon consumption, it initiates a chain reaction of physiological responses in the rodent's body.
The journey of a rodent exposed to Alpha Chloralose begins with a sudden sense of drowsiness, setting in within a mere 15 minutes. This initial lethargy is the first step towards the rodent's eventual demise. What follows is a loss of motor control, leaving the rodent staggering and uncoordinated, akin to a human inebriated by excessive alcohol consumption.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Alpha Chloralose's mode of action is its impact on the rodent's breathing patterns. It disrupts the normal respiratory processes, adding another layer to its potency. Moreover, Alpha Chloralose induces hypothermia in rodents, causing them to lose body heat rapidly. This phenomenon accelerates their decline and leads to a rather unique demise.
Alpha Chloralose excels in colder temperatures. It has a remarkable ability to hinder a rodent's capacity to regulate its body heat effectively. As temperatures drop into the 50 to 61 degrees Fahrenheit range, the efficacy of Alpha Chloralose rises. At these lower temperatures, you can achieve up to a 95% success rate in controlling rodent populations using this rodenticide.
This aspect makes Alpha Chloralose a valuable asset in the colder months when mice and other rodents seek shelter from the elements, often in the structures we occupy. It provides pest management professionals with an extra tool to combat infestations during the winter.
This rodenticide poses a moderate risk to dogs, with an LD50 (lethal dose for 50% of the population) range of 100 to 600 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Symptoms in dogs can include drowsiness, motor control loss, and hypothermia. Given that dogs are more likely to consume substances found outdoors, it's essential to ensure proper bait stations are used and placed strategically to prevent unintended exposure.
The onset of symptoms in dogs can be relatively rapid, typically occurring within one to two hours of ingestion. However, the effects can linger, lasting anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. Therefore, the utmost caution should be exercised when deploying Alpha Chloralose in areas accessible to pets.
Whether future regulations or research expand its use remains to be seen. Nonetheless, it is an exciting and potent option for managing rodent infestations, particularly in cold climates and structures like sheds and garages.
