You are welcome to listen in as I "explain things scientific". I have had great fun with lasers, robots and absorbing Quantum Physics. Now as a classroom teacher, laid low by heart surgery its time t... more

April 09, 2020Common Mistakes in Teaching Quantum MechanicsI find myself looking at Youtube video and internet notes to check details and always find the same style of mistakes that would through you off into the path of ignornance. Mainly the idea that uniform magnetic fields will exert a force on a balanced dipole. By getting this wrong it is just next to impossible to get going understanding this subject. There is also the relaxed way we say that a particular property like spin or obital angularmomentum is quantized when in fact it is the projection on to the z axis. This means that the length of the associated vector increases in fixed amount according to Squrt(s(s+1)) so not only are these vectors some integral number of units long they are also irrational numbers. There is great rain happening at the moment so you will have to struggle to hear over the rain noise sorry. I am only doing this for rehab. April 09, 2020The Way of Chuang Tzu_1I thought this would be a book on the art of war, but it is form the 60's and looks at amazing chinese phylosophy. I can't wait to get to hear his actually thoughts, its not far off. I do find the discussion informative and interesting as it points out that the great Chrisitian philosophers had read deeply classical texts. April 09, 2020Do Nuclei spinHave you ever noticed that nuclie of atoms never spin about the poles like the earth or like the wheels on a bike. People are aclimatized to seeing this spooky behaviour and I often find they are quite aggressive it you point out how unworldly it is. There are actually many other aspects in the equations that have me hovering between awe and just creeped out by reality. The agony of people continuing to explain (mansplain) things after you have pointed out a mistake make you cry then laugh. April 09, 2020Electron Spin ResonanceThis is a really cool dating method for really ancient teeth. I don't know you should call it resonance though because it is the electronics that is resonanting in this case. It is a bit light calling your FM radio an EM resonator. April 09, 2020Scientific and Social Models and the search for Conventions that workIt is surprising how few people can work out the distinction between a model and the actual thing it represents. It is going to take a few goes to nail this concepts as we need a model institution to deliver the idea. April 09, 2020Dante Australia is the spoils of Hell1Well I never expected to find out that I was living on the waist rock the devil had scoped out of the earth to make hell. It is really fascinating to see people build theme parks and people flock to them or at least think of them with warm memories. April 09, 2020Facebook technology to teach Quantum Mechanics1I am not sure about calling something the "International Tera Scale". But the idea of something after Aristotle 3.0 in the golden age of classical science is compelling. MP4 recording MP3 recording -- -- Your browser does not support the audio element....more0minPlay
