November 01, 2019What's Going On - Philadephia Asian American Film Festival, Navigating Gender IdentityWhat’s Going On is a show about making a difference in our communities and ourselves - I’m Loraine Ballard Morrill. What’s Going On is brought to you by the American Association for Cancer research the first and largest cancer research foundation in the world supporting research that is working towards curing cancers. I support this organization because cancer has touched the lives of people I love. Do what I do and donate – at aacr.org/donate. I’ve been doing interviews for – a while and I think I’m pretty good at it – but I have to admit that I stumbled a bit while talking with Dr. Yolanda Graham from Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health. The topic was gender affirmative model You might have noticed folks email signatures not only give you addresses, phone numbers and other convention info but you might also see a reference to the pronouns they identify with he/him she/her they/them. I’d like to think I’m pretty woke when it comes to gender – but I struggled a little during this conversation. If I struggled – I’m guessing some of you struggle as well. That’s why I’ was so glad to talk about this topic with Dr. Graham - https://www.devereux.org/site/SPageServer/https://www.apa.org/pubs/books/The-Gender-Affirmative-Model-Chapter-1-Sample.pdfFirst up – there are some great film festivals in the city like Blackstar and the upcoming Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival. I spoke with Festival Director Rob Buscher about the event which takes place November 7-17th celebrating and elevating the Asian American experience.https://phillyasianfilmfest.org/...more28minPlay

I’m Loraine Ballard Morrill. Crazy weather – right. Downpours, wind storms, sunshine, frost – if you’re bored with the weather just wait a few hours. In any case hope you’re having a wonderful morning despite the weather. There are a lot of kids who aren’t ready for the cold that’s coming this winter. I speak with Tyree Williams about a cool program called Project Cold War Coat Drive sponsored by https://1stnotnext.com/ that provides brand new coats for the boys and girls who need them. 1st Not Next is sponsoring a fundraising brunch Sunday 11-9 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Discovery Center 3401 Reservoir Drive. I don’t know if the numbers of child sexual abuse are getting higher or just that we’re more aware of the crisis and there’s more reporting. I had an important conversation with a survivor and award winning filmmaker Aishah Shahidah Simmons who has edited a new book of essays called love with accountability: Digging Up the Roots of Child Sexual Abuse.https://www.lovewithaccountability.com/anthology First up – there are some great film festivals in the city like Blackstar and the upcoming Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival.
