Publisher's Summary:
A dazzling look at Mayan mythology incarnate from New York Times best-selling author Steve Alten.
For 2,000 years, the Mayan Calendar has prophesied the end of mankind on a date equating to December 21st, 2012. As that day approaches, greed, corruption, economic collapse, and violence seem to be pushing our species to the predicted brink of disaster. But there is another doomsday threat looming in our near future, a very real threat that can wipe out not only humanity but our entire planet.
Phobos: Mayan Fear, Steve Alten's third book in the Mayan prophecy-based Domain series, is a doomsday rollercoaster ride of adventure that follows Immanuel Gabriel to the end of the world and back again for one last shot at salvation. During Immanuel's journey with his deceased grandfather, archaeologist Julius Gabriel, Julius reveals everything the Mayans knew and feared - from the secrets of creation that predate the Big Bang to the existence of extraterrestrials that have come to Earth to save our species.
The universe is not what it seems, nor is human existence. The ticking clock of physicality that begins at conception and terminates with our final breath is neither the end nor the beginning, but an elaborate ruse constructed as a test.
We are failing miserably.

Smooth Writing
Very smooth writing - great transitions and integrated sub-plots. Be aware that this is the third book in a series of three (The Domain Trilogy): Domain; Resurrection; and Phobos. Try to read them in order - although any one book is a great story unto itself.

Torn
I'm torn because there are aspects of this book that I liked and there are aspects that I didn't like. I loved Domain when I read it 5 or 6 years ago but this 3rd in the series just was a little bit too all over the place for me. I like Alten's writing and The Loch is one of my favorite books I've ever read (and I've read a lot) but I feel like there was too much crammed into this book for it to really completely flow smoothly. I would start reading a chapter and have to pause and say "wait, what?" All of a sudden the characters would be across the planet and weeks down the road and thrown right into the middle of a conflict without really bringing the reader along with the characters. I'm also a little upset that Alten just sent a character back in time so he could change what he thinks the 2012 Doomsday event will be caused by and then re-writes parts of the first novel because sending that character back in time messed up all the past events and now everything is different. For someone reading a series it just sort of makes the first two books pointless and you even state that if the current situations were around when you wrote Domain this is the book you would have written in the first place.
I will say that I have no problem with Alten's politics and personal beliefs that he writes into his books and I totally agree with a lot of them so that is a non factor in any negative feelings I have about his books. I just wished this book was flushed out a little better. There is so much there in only 380+ pages that the story got a little disjointed for me. But with that said the book was a page turner and I didn't know where it was going to go next.
