Phonica Records

We've been doing our mix series for 6 years now but, as a lot of you know, we have a wealth of talent working behind the counter or packing your orders. A lot of us DJ, have a radio show or produce music and now we wanted to highlight some of our colleagues and give you an insight into what each of one us like. In the ongoing lockdown, we wanted to shine a light on some our dedicated crew.

First up is Govind aka Kylin Tyce - who you will find working most weekends at the shop. You may know some of his releases on Tesselate or OldiVibes where his intricate minimal house and UK Garage-flavoured productions sit proudly on our wall racks! So enjoy an hour of perfectly-mixed house music from Kylin Tyce!

Running Back co-owner Gerd Janson is one of those very few people who get referred to as 'a DJ's DJ' - an aficionado and general nice guy that always delivers the goods whenever you hear him!

We are very lucky to finally get Gerd to do a mix for us as part of the Phonica Mix Series, so we hope you enjoy it. He describes the more disco flavoured-mix as "more the 2007 Computer-Incarnations-for-World-Peace-Gerd than the sadly non-existent 2020 Ibiza-Gerd."

North Carolina's Nadia Khan first appeared to us at Phonica when we heard her excellent release on Brooklyn label Scissor & Thread back in 2018, an exercise in subtlety and restraint, which is a delicate balance in a lot of ambient music. A later cassette only release on Where to Now was another example of 'less is more' and that is definitely the ethos of Nadia's mix for Off The Record.

So sit back and enjoy almost an hour's sonic journey of melodic ambience and delicate evolving textures . The mix features tracks from D.K. , Huerta, NewWorldaquarium, Fred P, Exael and Christopher Rau, amongst others. Enjoy this immersive deep-listening experience from Nadia Khan.

British DJ and producer Nebraska returns to Detroit Swindle‘s ever-impressive Heist Recordings for the third time with three disco-tinged dancefloor burners. Over on the flip-side, there’s a solid, ’80s sounding remix from Italian maestro Giovanni Damico to round the package off nicely.

Our pick for the premiere is the extra-lively, woodwind and guitar plucked B-side track ‘Dip & Flip’.

Ranging from deep and dubby to bass-heavy and bumpy, Pugilist‘s musical creations have been picked up by such labels as Whities, Zam Zam and Modern Hypnosis in recent years, but it’s his brilliant new three-tracker on DJ Oberman’s Nous’klaer Audio that really caught our attention.

With that in mind, we reached out to see if he would be interested in laying down a mix for us. The result is a chuggy, bass-driven and highly percussive journey through all things dub, slo-mo techno and broken beat, with almost forty tracks crammed into the one hour and thirty-six-minute long recording – many of which unreleased. Enjoy! 🔉 🔊 Full feature: bit.ly/OTRMIX8
