  • Phonica Mix Series 29: Youandewan
Youandewan on the controls this month for the latest addition to the Phonica Mix Series!
Ewan Smith has been consistently forging his own tender brand of deep house since 2009. • Phonica Premieres: Spooky J - Pfer [BLIP DISCS]
Spooky J, the mask hiding a man of rhythm. An internationally experienced Jazz percussionist and composer based in Leeds, whose originality and experimentation has spearheaded Blip Discs' darkest, most outlandish and hands-on dispatch to date.
No samples, only original recordings and found-sounds, and Spooky-J's fascinating approach to Doepfer synth, tam-tam, field recorded Avignonese cows and burgled suburbs in Leeds, kalimba, brush snare... entirely originally recorded tracks seamlessly synthesised and orchestrated - dancefloor gelignite, handle with care as it may cause spontaneous combustion.
Phonica have the privilege of premiering flipside 'Pfer'. We really love the freaky alien soundscapes contrasted with down-tempo jungle beats. It makes us think of what Soichi Terada soundtracking the ritual sacrifice of humans by alien apes that had successfully taken over the planet would sound like... Dayum!

  • Phonica Premieres: Hugo Jay - Call You [HOKKAIDO DANCE CLUB]
After a sell out release with the man of the hour – Mall Grab, Hokkaido Dance Club return with a Various Artists 12" featuring four deep and dusty cuts from up and coming producers from New York to New Zealand.
Solid third offering from the Leeds-based label run by Viers (aka LK) and Don Found that includes the standout 'Call You' by Hugo Jay, a deep, mellow house track with soft pads and a catchy vocal sample that serves as the perfect end of the summer soundtrack.
The Auckland producer has recently released his debut LP via London-based collective Coastal Haze - available only on cassette or digital, and we foresee that his second release is going to sell quickly so make sure you reserve your copy ahead of the official release on the 23th of September. http://bit.ly/PhonicaPremieres017

  • Phonica Premieres: Uffe - Lesser Known Values [TARTELET]
Following his acclaimed debut, "Radio Days", Danish producer Uffe Christensen returns to Tartelet Records whith his second LP “No!”. Every bit as abundant as his first LP, it's a record that scales polyrhythmic percussion, improvised jazz, & billowing ballads.
His new record is cut in the same spirit as the last: a borderless approach to music-making with organic instrumentation at its heart. Genres collide peaceably – off-beat soul with jazz, hip-hop with the heft of house – and are melded smooth with an earthy warmth. Uffe enjoys his place on the perimeter – an outlier searching critically for something closer to a timeless groove. Far from a churn of simple dance floor fodder, the album is a journey through a consummate narrative.
Phonica Records get the scoop on one of the LP's standout tracks - "Lesser Known Values", featuring an irresistible warbling jazz breakdown.
“No!” will be available on 2xLP (with bonus 7”) plus digital download and streaming formats from 14 October but you can pre-order your copy here to make sure you don't miss out.

  • Phonica Premieres: Outboxx - Rumours (Andres Remix) [HYPERCOLOUR]
Phonica are proud to premiere a remix from Detroit hero Andrés reworking the trademark low-slung house of Bristol duo Outboxx. With previous releases on fellow West Country labels Futureboogie and Idle Hands, Outboxx debut here on Hypercolour, completing their Bristol label hat trick.
Andrés requires little introduction, with timeless releases on his own La Vida label and Kenny Dixon Jnr’s Mahogani Music and KDJ labels. The revered producer stamps his signature all over his version with gentle adjustments of the original, putting a greater focus on the scintillating pads and offering a beach-side alternative to the more melodic Original Mix.
You can reserve your copy here to guarantee not missing out on another future classic: bit.ly/PhonicaPremieres18

  • Phonica Mix Series 28: Bell Towers
Stepping up to the decks this month for the latest addition to the Phonica Mix Series is Melbourne's Bell Towers. We were first introduced to Rohan's records back in 2013 when he released 'Tonight I'm Flying' for Prins Thomas' Full Pup sub-label. Since then he's become one of Public Possession's most prolific producers. Before relocating to London he cut his teeth throwing the infamous Bamboo Musik parties that were legendary for their elaborate themes and hedonistic atmosphere and now Rohan seems to bring the Bamboo vibe with everywhere he plays. Earlier this year the Phonica crew were lucky enough to catch him playing for ReviveHER and his set is still fresh in our minds for the good-time vibes, daring track selection and bold dance moves. From that night forward we knew we had to get him on-board. Listen to the mix and check out the mini-interview and the full tracklist on the blog ---> j.mp/PhonicaMixSeries28

  • Stark Champagne
Omar Santis makes his debut on Karakul with the four track EP ‘A T.D.L.D Joint’.
Karakul is a new label focusing on deeper House cuts from around the world. First up is Chilean born Stockholm dwelling Omar Santis.
Omar first came to our attention through his records on the Woodsmen & Lady Log label, the first of which was a split 12” with Niklas Andersson which he then followed up with his own EP titled simply ‘W&LL003’ a few months later. Two fantastic records featuring his low slung, immersive House production that caught Karakul’s ears immediately.
Omar tells us ‘A T.D.L.D Joint’ is an abbreviation of ‘Ta det lugnt daa’ meaning ‘Take it easy then yeah’ and on this 12” he certainly does, in the best possible way. It’s his most soulful record to date, building upon his detailed signature sound with perfectly placed vocals on ‘Stark Champagne’, melancholic Rhodes on ‘Lulu’s Jam’, tribal percussion and pads on ‘At The Shanzai Hotel’ and finally lowering the pace altogether for the emotional ender ‘Inward’.
