There are many types of restoration projects. In this case, we take a photo that was rife with tiny splotches of dirt. Additionally, we learn how to remove a texture that would make sharpening impossible.

Now that Photoshop CS5 has been released, the job of creating a believable hair mask is now much easier, thanks to the Edge Detection technology built into the Refine Edge/Mask command.

The techniques involved in masking out dark hair are very similar to masking out light hair, except we use a Multiply blending mode on the layer that supplies all of the edge detail instead of a Screen or Lighten mode. As in my previous screencast on hair, we use a brush set to Overlay mode to paint hair on an alpha channel. Powerful stuff!
