Most companies have some form of testing process they require developers to do, however many times there seems to be some problems ; 1. Some tests are really easy and the questions can be copied and pasted which proves nothing if developers pass. 2. Some tests have very little to do with the day to day for the job being tested. 3.Some tests do not evaluate the true ability and at times they can be used to turn away good candidates. 4. Every environment is different and it’s hard to assess how someone actually codes unless you ask good well thought out questions as well as spending time them whilst they code etc. We will be hearing Dan’s view and advice on this topic.

EP#17 Should Employed Developers Work On Side Projects?

Many developers have side projects for different reasons, some companies really encourage it whilst others discourage it. We will be discussing on how both parties can find a middle ground as opposed to having a Yes or No approach, a middle ground which will be  beneficial for both parties.

This month we will be running a new session with Dan Blows ,Currently  Head of Engineering and has held positions such as Senior Developer as well as a Tech Lead. He is also currently responsible for leading a number of developers. 

In this first session we will discuss his view on what defines a Senior Developer,  some of the attributes, characteristics and skills. We will be covering questions such as How important is communication skills for a Senior Developer? How many years do you need to have in order to be classed as a Senior Developer? Would contracting accelerate your journey as a Senior Developer? and many more.

In this episode we will be discussing the benefits of having knowledge and experience with cloud, AWS, Lambda AWS etc. Dan will cover the importance of having a good grasp of how servers work and deploying your code and a good understanding of web servers.

In this episode I will cover some questions and answers I asked Dan a few months ago and I wanted to cover this as I believe it’s relevant based on some recent questions. We will cover Dan’s personal experience working with Corporates & Start ups, as well as working within an agency and the benefits & disadvantages of that.

Finishing this series, we will discuss the benefits of Mobile development skills. In a time where we use our mobiles frequently, what do developers who want to get in this field need to do?  Clem will discuss the importance of Javascript, React, VueJS in 2018 and so much more.
