Today's message is part 2 of last week's message titled Hope.

The challenge in our faith is that we must mean something by it. To mean something by it, God's promises must be true. This is Biblical hope; God's promises as absolute!

Today we celebrate Easter Sunday. A day meant to reflect on our Lord's resurrection from the dead.

We're not alone in this celebration. Even now, we join together with countless Christians strewn across the unique world that God has made. And although not united by location (even you and me), we are united with each other and all people who call upon the name of King Jesus in order to be saved.

Today I'd like to take you on a bit of a journey. My aim is to expand our understanding of what Easter is all about.

So over the next 30 minutes or so, we're going to connect our understanding of some of the most important concepts in the Scripture (concepts like heaven, God's presence, and His desire to meet with us) WITH Easter, with the death burial and resurrection of Jesus.

This week my newsfeed was inundated with articles asking very common questions in times like these: Questions like, 'Where is God?' 'What is He doing?' 'Why is this happening?' "Is this judgment, sin?' And of course, that also meant I had to wade through some very (let's just say) 'cringe-worthy' theories.

But putting the "answers" of Job's friends where they belong (in the round file), I think we all understand why questions like these happen. As people, we want and even need answers in life. We long for meaning.

Over the past two weeks, we've focused our attention on issues that are of particular importance for our current times. In week one, we looked at what it means to walk by faith instead of fear. Last week, we took a really important look in the mirror to discover what truly sets us apart as Christians. As you'll should recall, what makes us different is not compassion or charity, love, or justice, but instead the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Today, in keeping with these timely issues, we are looking at the question of what constitutes Church; in particular, what it means to assemble together and its sanctifying importance.

Have you ever thought about what sets the Church apart in times like these? What makes you and I (as God's people) genuinely different? Now, just so you know, I'm not talking about some unique "market share" in the world. Something that enables the Church to remain viable as an organization among competing entities. That's all nonsense! Instead, what I'm talking about is an existential difference. A difference that is real. One that has an actual impact on the here and now.

In a way, I'm reflecting on holiness proper with this question. Last week I said that living by fear and not by faith would be to abdicate our responsibility for being set apart. After all, we are not people of the spirit of this world. We have not been given a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7). Instead, we've been given a new Spirit, One of power, love, and discipline. And although this new Spirit will affect every area of life, I also made it clear that Paul was not talking about pandemics in his message to Timothy (but more on that in a bit).

So, the question remains; what truly sets us apart?

Today we're going to answer this question. And the answer we find is no doubt going to challenge us because in identifying what DOES set us apart, we will have to admit and relinquish our bragging rights as to what doesn't set us apart. Another challenge we'll face today is that once we see what DOES set us apart, we're going to have to get busy actually doing it. This is where the context of 2 Timothy 1 and 2 Corinthians 5 come into play.
