The consequences of an unprotected flock.
There is a spiritual battle going on in every faithful church. Christ taught that there is to be unity within the church body. He taught to love one another. Satan loves when Christians are disobedient to the teaching of Scripture. When a pastor is obedient in his duty to teach and exhort God’s flock, Satan will fight back! A pastor, then, is there for protection from these assaults. Travis lays out the reasons the flock needs protection and what are the consequences if the flock is not protected.

More about the duty of a pastor to exhort us to God fearing living.
In this message, we are continuing to learn about the duty of our pastors to exhort us to faithful, God-fearing living. Exhortation is the job of our pastors and elders, and even the job of each of us as Christians. How comfortable are you with someone lovingly pointing out your sin? Most of the time people resent any intrusion into their lives, especially when it challenges them to deal with sin. But undealt with sin is a huge threat to you and to the church body. How comfortable are you with lovingly addressing sin in the life of a close friend or family member? Ask God to help you be bold, but loving when addressing sin in others. But also pray that God will help you to appreciate and welcome other Christian’s exhortations. Really examine your heart!

Are you being challenged to live in righteousness?
Travis continues his teaching regarding the pastors’ shepherding of the flock with exhortation. He shows that exhortation is a part of the administration of the pastorate. He explains why exhortation is part of the pastor’s duty. He expounds on what the pastors’ shepherding exhortation encompasses. Travis challenges us to look at our lives. Are you being challenged by your pastors teaching? Are you applying and living by what you’ve learned through his instruction? Does his exhortation press your conscience to an obedient response? Your Pastors teaching should be challenging you to live in righteousness. If you are not being challenged, realize that your pastor may not be fulfilling a vital, eternally significant part of his responsibility of shepherding the flock of God.

The Bible teaches exhortation is appropriate and necessary.
Travis continues to speak on the shepherd’s exhortation. Exhortation is to take what’s instructed and work it into the listeners lives through command, urging, pleading, and encouragement. Sadly, exhortation has fallen on hard times. But the Bible teaches that exhortation is not only appropriate, but necessary! In the last message, Travis gave some reasons why exhortation is a pastoral necessity. First, it’s to stimulate growth by regularly challenging the will. Challenging the will tests the true understanding of the truth being taught. Travis starts right into the most important lesson about exhortation. His second point: Pastors are called BY GOD to shepherd their flock well through exhortation.

What is exhortation in preaching?
It is the shepherd’s duty to exhort the flock of God from a foundation of biblical, doctrinal, theological truth, so that Christians will love, serve, and obey God with all their heart, soul, strength, and mind. What is the purpose of exhortation in preaching? Why does a Christian need not only instruction from a pastor, but also exhortation? Why is the local church so important to the teaching of God’s word? Ask yourself, do I attend a local church? Does the church I attend instruct and exhort the truth of God’s word? Do you feel a conviction to change yourself after the preaching you have listened to? Travis explains the necessity for regularly attending a local church that causes you to want to follow Jesus obediently.

Travis begins by teaching us about a pastor’s job description. He begins by reminding us of Jesus’s words to Peter that he is to shepherd the flock of God. Travis explains that the greatest need believers have is instruction in the Word of God. We live in a society that rejects authority and allows thinking to be controlled by self-centered desires. Encouragement to run the race set before us, in order to win.
Travis challenges us to examine our life’s focus. In order to excel at something, we have to focus and put effort into the tasks required. Same with our spiritual life and our walk with the Lord. God did not give us salvation and want us to sit back and grow. He wants us to run the race He set before us and to win. He wants us to be focused on Him and eternal things not be distracted by the things of this world. In these verses, Paul gives us motivation and encouragement to run the race God has given us and to win.

Conduct yourself as Jesus did.
Do you consider other peoples’ maturity in the faith when you speak with them? Do you consider what you might be doing or talking about that will cause another Christian to stumble in their walk with the Lord? Paul wrote a letter of rebuke to the Corinthian church because some of the members were manifesting deep-seated pride and arrogance. These people’s actions were causing other believers to stumble in their faith. Paul wrote to correct their actions and to warn them that this was not acceptable. Travis examines Pauls’ example of the use of athletes to inform the Corinthians and us of how we are to conduct ourselves every day of our lives.
