David gives thanks to God.

This is a continuation of Travis’s exegete of psalm 122:1-9, where Travis gave us the first reason David in the psalm shows his thanks to God. Travis gives us three more reasons David says we are to give thanks.  Travis will also show us how the psalm tells us as believers we’re serving the same purpose of God, to unite the people of God as one people under one shepherd.

In Psalm 122:1-9, David expresses his longing and his joy to worship with his people in the house of the Lord. David says, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord.’”  He loves being in the house of the Lord because he can focus on the Lord with others of his nation. Travis explains why David longed to bring the Arc of the Covenant to Jerusalem. God’s mercy is an attitude we should display to others.

Jesus faced rejection from all people, Jew, Samaritan, Roman, everyone. Travis explains what Jesus’ meekness of mercy was willing to endure. It’s through this Man of Sorrows, who’s acquainted with grief, that God demonstrated his saving mercy by purchasing the salvation of all the elect. God-like mercy is firm and kind, and meek. God’s mercy extends outward in an attitude of kindness to people, actions of tenderness and gentleness toward people in true spiritual need. This is the mercy we need to extend to others. If God is at the center of our thinking, we act toward people with his interests in mind.

Jesus’ training of the Twelve as future Missionaries of God’s mercy.

Jesus was sent by God the father to bring God’s mercy to humanity. Jesus has completed His ministry to the Jews and was rejected. Jesus now sets his face toward Jerusalem and toward what he has to accomplish there on the cross.  But Jesus still needs to prepare the Twelve for their role as future administrators of God’s mission of mercy. Travis expounds upon other characteristics Jesus has that the twelve need to learn and grow in, so they can continue to be God’s missionaries of mercy in and through the church.

Jesus is firm when dealing with sin.

Jesus characterized mercy by firmness. In this message you will hear how Jesus is firm about dealing with peoples’ sin. The word empathy is more commonly used today, when talking about how we should deal with peoples struggles, illnesses, and infirmities. Jesus did not come to earth to heal people of illnesses and bodily infirmities or to remove the trials of life. Jesus came to provide God’s mercy to people who realize that they are in rebellion to a holy God. Travis helps us to see the true reason for Jesus’ coming and the true mercy of God.
