  • HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Moeller named Arrows' most valuable player

(Editor’s Note: The Pipestone County Star will run a separate story on all-Big South Conference and all-state honors in the Thursday, June 26, edition.) The Pipestone Area Schools softball team recalled the 2025 campaign during a special season-ending awards night at a local residence on Tuesday, June 10. Two awards were voted on by the Arrow players: most valuable performer and most improved. Senior Mariah Moeller was selected as the team’s most valuable player — fresh off a performance in the Minnesota all-star games on Sunday, June 8, at Caswell Park in North Mankato. “I got to meet a lot...

  • HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Russell-Tyler-Ruthton takes consolation

SAUK RAPIDS — Russell-Tyler-Ruthton senior Eli Determan pitched the Knights to the eventual Class A consolation championship. At least that’s what the Minnesota State High School League determined, partially based on poor weather that rained out remaining games at Bob Cross Field. “Russell-Tyler-Ruthton received the consolation trophy by virtue of winning its consolation semifinal game,” MSHSL spokesman Tim Leighton said in an email to the Pipestone County Star. “They will not share that trophy because neither Frazee nor Legacy Christian advanced from their consolation semifinal when it was canceled because of inclement weather,” Leighton added. So, for RTR, a historic...

  • HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Feels like the first time ...

MILROY — Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s trip to the Class A state tournament, save for The Beatles reference, was a “long and winding road.” In the opening round back on Saturday, May 24, the Knights survived a 12-inning, one-run thriller over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and the Panthers’ premium pitcher Trevor Smith. Then RTR (19-7) defeated county rival Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian and twice beat talented Dawson-Boyd 9-2 (Wednesday, May 28) and 5-4 (Tuesday, June 3). The Knights’ lone tournament hiccup versus Yellow Medicine East, a 7-6 loss on May 31, meant they would need to sweep the Sting in the Section 3A championships Thursday, June 5,...

The Sioux City (Iowa) Futures were loaded for bear with college players, and that vintage showed in a 9-0 victory over the A’s at City Field on a blustery Sunday, June 8. “Every one of their players is at some sort of college program,” A’s head coach Avery Ploeger noted. “They’re good athletes.” Futures players compete for Morningside, Briar Cliff, Northwestern, Sioux Falls and community colleges scattered throughout Iowa. Clean-up hitter Clayton...
