EDGERTON — This year marks the 65th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements in Minnesota sports history. That feat? Edgerton Public School’s one-class boys basketball state championship. The sports editor thought it would be fitting to remember this event for many reasons, with two of those coming immediately to mind. First, this year’s Edgerton team earned an upset victory over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Saturday, March 1, at Worthington High School’s Trojan Gymnasium in the Section 3A South subdistrict tournament. The Flying Dutchmen won two postseason games — also handily defeating Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda in the play-in round — and that gave...

Pipestone Area Schools and Section 3AA championships. That’s been a hand-in-hand relationship. That is, until last year, when Jackson County Central eliminated the Arrows in six innings at the 3AA Tournament in Marshall. Dassel-Cokato eventually eliminated the Huskies, 2-0, in the section title game. The Arrows are only two years removed from a Class AA sixth-place finish at state. And the girls know “the standard is the standard,” to borrow a phrase from Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. PAS is coming off a 15-9 season with notable wins over Class A third-place Russell-Tyler-Ruthton and former Class A state representative...

LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Conference has released all-league honors in both girls basketball and wrestling. Hills-Beaver Creek sat atop the conference standings when all was said and done, with a 17-1 record. That was three games clear of Adrian-Ellsworth. Southwest Minnesota Christian was fourth (12-6), Edgerton Public fifth (11-7) and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton sixth (9-9). Three Eagles earned all-league honors in Hannah Caspersen, Madyson Fey and Victoria Prins. Kya Voge and Reese Vande Griend represent Edgerton. RTR’s Makayla Hesse joins the elite list. Several area players were honorably mentioned: Elliott Fleischman (Edgerton) and Avery Schreurs and Addi Serreyn (RTR). Hills-Beaver Creek...

Pipestone Area Schools doesn’t change head track and field coaches often. When that happens, the moment is notable. The Pipestone Area school board hired Mark Moeller as the new coach for both the boys and girls programs during its regular meeting on Feb. 24 in Room 1148. “It’s pretty surreal,” Moeller said. “There had been only two head coaches for 60 years (here). This means the world to me. It’s a sport I’ve loved since I was 11 years old.” Moeller assumes the reins from Todd Tinklenberg, who will remain on staff as an assistant. While he was an assistant,...
