Somali pirates attack ships in the Gulf of Aden and kidnap the crews, for which they demand
and receive high ransoms for their release. Security companies and insurance companies have
thus found a new source of income, because they react to the piracy and confiscation of ships
and the kidnapping of crew members and ship guests with special offers – and earn a lot of
money with it. And piracy flourishes despite military protection and the avoidance of danger
zones. The pirate crews are made up of all sorts of people who have become unemployed as a
result of a lack of work or who have been deprived of their livelihood through overfishing of the
seas by fishing companies. So the pirates are first and foremost former fishermen and civil war
fighters, consequently the piracy and the ransom-pressing as well as the stealing and
plundering are done by such people, which on the one hand happens to earn a living, and on
the other hand also to be able to enrich themselves. As far as Somali pirates are concerned,
they have an important area in the Gulf of Aden for their raids, because their direct proximity to
important shipping routes between Asia and Europe makes everything easy for them. As a rule,
pirates are young men who have little prospect of a future in their country, so piracy offers them
