Plan for failure!
I know, it's counterintuitive. A lot of people claim they don't have a plan B, but that's very misleading.
What they really mean is they have one PRIMARY goal. That one doesn't normally change.
But the second and third level goals to get to the primary goal might need a lot of changes. Those are the goals you spend the least amount of time seeing defining, yet they are extremely important to your success in reaching your top goal.
The funny part is that if you plan for the possibility of failure, you gain confidence and are less likely to fail. You act more since you're no longer afraid of failing.
A secondary benefit is sometimes the pain of seeing it fail in your head first drives you to be more focused. That can lead you to more success, too.
So, have a plan for those failures along the way!
No excuses!
