For most, being nude is a passive, even furtive thing, but when done mindfully, domestic naturism can become a practice, not unlike yoga or meditation, that has the potential to enrich your health and happiness. This month, my figure drawing group Defining Bodies will be seven years old. The group’s setup and membership have changed a LOT in those seven years, far from our humble Facebook origins, but I think today we’re stronger than we’ve ever been. As of this writing, I just recently finished taking down our first ever group art show, and am counting down the days before we get to meet up again on a private farm where we can be nude and make art outdoors. 🪐

Of all the nude holidays and events taking place during Nude Recreation Week, the award for "most irreverent" undoubtedly goes to the annual Mooning of the Amtrak in Laguna Niguel, California. Of course, the perennial mooning is not officially tied to Nude Recreation Week, but the cheeky spirit of the yearly occasion aligns remarkably well with the week's celebration of body positivity and liberation. 🪐

To counter this manufactured controversy, we must understand its manipulative nature and respond with a nuanced approach that addresses the underlying issue. Tearing down others who express nudity differently won't solve the moral panic. 🪐

The AANR Bulletin has a storied history that is closely intertwined with the history of America’s nudism movement. At different junctures over the years, The Bulletin itself has featured articles chronicling this history. These generally go back to 1951, when The Bulletin began as a standalone publication. However, the magazine’s roots actually reach back nearly 20 years earlier to the very beginning of the nudism movement. Interestingly, what many of its previous written histories omit is a dramatic story of political conflict and upheaval within the nudist movement, a quarrel which led The Bulletin to be established in the first place. 🪐

Zelda Suplee was a writer, publisher, and occasional actor whose intelligence and fearlessness made her a powerful force for nudist advocacy and gender studies and education. She proudly represented both spheres publicly, appearing on television and in films, radio and print media over a career of advocacy that spanned more than forty years. 🪐

Returning to my local nudist club after months away felt like coming back to a familiar sanctuary. Surrounded by familiar faces, warm greetings, and a sense of community, it revitalizes me. Accepted as I am, it's a place where I flourish and feel unburdened from the stress of the real world. Whenever I’m there and witness this vibrant community, I think of the ‘third place’—a term introduced by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book, "The Great Good Place." 🪐

Despite being the right age during its reign on MTV, I didn’t get into Jackass until just last year. Like a lot of people, I thought it was just garbage, dudes hurting each other and pulling mean pranks to get laughs from the lowest common denominator. But my wife is a fan, a fact which puzzled me since we met over a decade ago. When Jackass Forever landed on Paramount+, she coaxed me into watching it, telling me to sit through the opening at least. I relented and sat down, prepared to be annoyed. 🪐

The current landscape for nudists is dire, necessitating collective organization. Faced with diverse threats - political, environmental, and societal - we have a choice: resist or surrender. Our organizational bodies, reliant on dwindling volunteer participation, are our defensive bastions, offering a legitimate voice to our cause. But, without engaged volunteers, they falter, and the movement suffers. 🪐
