But there was one big problem—Kenner wasn’t ready to produce the toys. The solution? The infamous Early Bird Certificate package, where kids received an empty envelope with a promise: their Star Wars figures would arrive soon. And it worked! The first four figures—Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and R2-D2—were released in 1978, kicking off a toy revolution. Kenner didn’t stop there, quickly expanding the line with beloved characters like Han Solo, Darth Vader, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as vehicles like the Millennium Falcon and X-Wing.

Initially released with a vinyl cape in 1978, it was soon replaced by a cloth cape version, making the vinyl cape version an incredibly rare and valuable collectible today.
