Play It Up

In this episode of the Play It Up Podcast, Shaun, Mike, and Den are joined by Jack Philippi - a friend of the show, retro gaming enthusiast, and all-around good bloke who is an important part of the Australian retro gaming community.

We chat about Jack's history with gaming, his love of World of Warcraft and Minecraft, our experiences playing Metal Gear Solid which was the most recent game featured in our little video game club where we all play a game that has been voted for and then get together to discuss it (this meeting just so happened to only have Shaun, Mike, Dennis and Jack so we made it into a podcast - why not!).

As well as get to know Geoff and chat about his gaming history,  records on other games and the philosophy behind his gaming experiences, we discuss his future goals with some well known classics he's loved since his teens.

Along the way, the team also chat about friends now circling the goal of Killscreener glory, the guys' interests in speedrunning, FPGA vs physical Arcade Hardware and much more!

The Shed in Denmark has a mythical air about it amongst retro and arcade gamers. It sounds almost too good to be true. A shed that is full of arcade cabinets that some awesome fella opens up a few times every year to anyone lucky enough to get an invite? A magical place where many world record players attend and where many world records have been achieved? Great beer and even a pool? Yep, that's right, The Shed has it all....and that awesome fella? He is none other than Michael Trier. Shaun was lucky enough to visit the shed recently and spend 3 nights in gaming heaven. Shaun was also lucky enough to interview the man behind the madness to find out more about Michael and how The Shed became what it is today. Here it is! Enjoy!

One of the topics we discuss was Michael's involvement in a recently released Documentary - Kim Kanonarm and the Arcade Quest (Kim Kanonarm Og Rejsen Mod Verdensrekorden - In Danish) which is the story of how one of The Shed regulars and arcade gaming legend, Kim Kanonarm, attempts to break the Gyruss World Record with the help of his friends: Michael Trier, Michael Dyst, Carsten Lauridsen, Svavar Gunnarson, Emil Gotfredsen, Rasmus Madsen and more.

You can buy a signed or non-signed copy from a friend of The Shed Mads Jacobsen's store here: https://www.nintendopusheren.dk/vare-kategori/kim-kanonarm-dvd/ (shipping is currently only available to Europe and Australia)

You can also buy it here: https://www.gucca.dk/kim-kanonarm-og-rejsen-mod-verdensrekorden-dvd-p537564.

In this series of episodes from the Play It Up Podcast called 'Kongversations' we will be having chats with some prominent players in the Donkey Kong scene in Australia. We are talking original arcade Donkey Kong.

In this episode, Neil and Dennis chat with Shaun Ruhland. Shaun is usually a co-host of the Play It Up Podcast but in this crazy twist of an episode, he is interviewed by his fellow co-hosts! Shaun made the top 16 at Australian Kong Off 2 and managed to make it to the quarter-finals of Australian Kong Off 3. Since he has buggered off to Germany he couldn't make the recent Kong Off 4 but at least he got to have this chat about the old angry monkey in the lead up to that event.
