  • The Greg Hughes Show Thursday 09/04/2026

The airwaves were busy today as we tackled the rising tide of public dissent, personal triumphs, and local legends making a global impact. Here is a look back at what went down in this hour of the show.

The People’s Protest: A Nation at Odds?

We took an extensive look at the morning newspapers, which are dominated by the escalating fuel protests. We heard directly from the front lines, featuring voices from:

    • Farmers & Hauliers: Discussing the unsustainable costs of keeping the wheels of industry turning.

    • Carers & Promoters: Highlighting how the fuel crisis is trickling down to the most vulnerable and the arts sector.

The Survey Results: We revealed the staggering findings of a recent survey of 5,000 people. The data shows 99.4% support for the protests—a figure that stands in stark contrast to recent dismissive comments from Government leaders.

      Living with Tourette’s: Oscor’s Story

In a truly moving segment, we were joined by 13-year-old Oscor, his mother Melanie, and his aunt, Cllr Joy Beard. Oscor, who lives with Tourette’s, spoke about his advocacy work and the power of representation.

      • Raising Awareness: The family reflected on how films like ‘I Swear’ are vital in dismantling stigmas.

      • Oscor’s Mission: We heard about the incredible work this young man is doing to educate his peers and the wider community.

        Social Inclusion & Local Stars

        • Social Inclusion Week: Katie McGee from Cara House Family Resource Centre called in to give us a sneak peek at their packed program. From community workshops to social gatherings, there is something for everyone to feel connected this week.

        • To the Moon and Back: Inver native Dr. Peter Coyle shared the fascinating story of his career and the critical role he played in the success of the Apollo 11 mission. It’s not every day you talk to a man who helped put boots on the lunar surface!

          Legislative Protection & Victim Safety

We open the show with a look at the morning newspapers and a significant legislative proposal from Deputy Matt Carthy. Carthy discusses his new proposals aimed at closing a gap in the justice system. The legislation would allow judges to impose a protection order at the point of conviction, ensuring that once a perpetrator is released from prison, they are legally barred from being in the vicinity of their victim.

The Fuel Crisis & Public Protest

The rising cost of living continues to bite, leading to renewed fuel protests.

          • Krissi Watson, known for her TikTok insights as a “haulier’s wife,” joins us to discuss the disruption. While acknowledging the inconvenience to the public, she argues that these protests are a necessary stand against spiralling costs.

          • Cllr Tomas Sean Devine offers a different perspective, expressing his disappointment at the low turnout for this morning’s protest in Letterkenny, questioning the momentum behind the movement.

            Access Denied: Trá na Rossan

A local controversy is brewing in Downings regarding the removal of public access to Trá na Rossan beach. The closure has sparked outrage among locals and tourists alike. However, Cllr Liam Blaney joins the program to provide an update, stating he is “hopeful” that a resolution will be reached in the near future to restore access.

The DCB Office: A Tone-Deaf Hold Tone?

Mica/DCB campaigner Marti McElhinney voices his frustration with Donegal County Council. He highlights what he describes as an “insulting” choice of hold music: ‘The Homes of Donegal.’ McElhinney argues that playing a song celebrating Donegal homes to people who are currently watching theirs crumble due to defective blocks shows a staggering lack of empathy.

AI in Business: Help or Hinderance?

Is AI-generated content hurting the “shop local” vibe? Shaun McGonigle of Grow Path Media joins us to discuss the pitfalls of modern marketing. He suggests that small businesses may actually be driving customers away by using overly polished or “fake-looking” AI images instead of authentic, human-led content.

            Global Politics & Local Views

Finally, we turn our eyes toward the United States. Retired Sergeant Christie Galligan joins the show to discuss the current political climate, stating his firm belief that Donald Trump is not fit for office as the race for the White House continues to dominate global headlines.

With hauliers and families feeling the pinch, we discuss the calls for government intervention to curb the spiralling costs of petrol and diesel.

            The Fight for Miscarriage Leave

Following new legislation in Northern Ireland, Tanya from Letterkenny joins us to share her own deeply personal experience. She backs the growing calls for the Republic to introduce paid leave for those who suffer a miscarriage, highlighting the need for workplace compassion and time to grieve.

              • Business Matters – Ep 290: A social entrepreneur in Gweedore, using wasted energy more productively, plus construction sector challenges

On Business Matters this week, Chris Ashmore has been finding out about Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, how millions of euro’s worth of energy is being wasted each year – but this could change – and also the challenges facing the construction industry due to increased oil and gas prices.

Up first, Chris has been speaking with David McCann of the Sea Collective based in Gweedore, an environmental outreach group that aims to inspire people to act positively in relation to marine biodiversity. He has benefited from a programme run by Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, and came back to Ireland having spend many years in Asia.

Following that, Chris has been finding out about  potential exists to make use of surplus electricity that is being generated by renewable energy sources, such as wind. At times, particularly during the night, there can be a surplus of electricity generated by wind. Much of this is not used and wasted. However, EnergyCloud, a not-for-profit initiative, wants to use surplus renewable energy – clean electricity that would otherwise be wasted – to support households in fuel poverty.  They are already working with local authorities on projects including using this surplus electricity to provide hot water for free in social housing.  CEO Alan Wyley has been outlining how he would like to see things progressing.

Finally, Chris talks with Justin Molloy, Director of Western and Midland Region of the Construction Industry Federation about the implications of higher energy prices.
