Roger Espinoza is a Honduran former professional footballer who played primarily as a midfielder or defender. Born in Puerto Cortés, Honduras, he emigrated to the United States at age twelve and developed his soccer career through college soccer at Yavapai College and Ohio State University. Espinoza was drafted by Sporting Kansas City in 2008, where he became a key player, winning multiple U.S. Open Cups. He also had a successful stint with English club Wigan Athletic, winning the FA Cup in 2013. Internationally, Espinoza represented Honduras in both the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup as well as in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Following his playing career, he transitioned into coaching, currently serving as a first team assistant coach at Sporting Kansas City.

This week Roger opens up about his path from growing up in Honduras to becoming a professional soccer player in the U.S. He talks about the sacrifices his parents made, his experience in college soccer, and what it really takes to make it in the pros.
