1 Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. 2 A wise man's heart inclines him to the right, but a fool's heart to the left. - Ecclesiastes 10:1-2
On the Wise and Fools
1. Avoid the fool’s trajectory (10:2).
2. Avoid the fool’s tendencies (10:1-20).
-Fools spoil what is good (10:1).
1 Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. Ecclesiastes 10:1
-Fools endanger themselves (10:3-11).
3 Even when the fool walks on the road, he lacks sense, and he says to everyone that he is a fool. Ecclesiastes 10:3
-Fools create havoc with their words (10:12-15, 20).
13 The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is evil madness. 14 A fool multiplies words, though no man knows what is to be, and who can tell him what will be after him? - Ecclesiastes 10:13-14 (ESV)
-Fools avoid moderation and discipline (10:16-19).
17 Happy are you, O land, when your king is the son of the nobility, and your princes feast at the proper time, for strength, and not for drunkenness! 18 Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks.- Ecclesiastes 10:17-18 (ESV)
3. Follow the path of the wise (11).
-The wise plan ahead (11:1-4).
1 Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. 2 Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what disaster may happen on earth. - Ecclesiastes 11:1-2 (ESV)
-The wise know their limitations (11:5).
5 As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. - Ecclesiastes 11:5 (ESV)
-The wise work diligently (11:6-7).
6 In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good. 7 Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. - Ecclesiastes 11:6-7 (ESV)
-The wise count their days (11:8-10).
8 So if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity. 9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. - Ecclesiastes 11:8-9 (ESV)
